About Our College

A private college situated in the heart of Oxford, Carfax College specializes in providing the highest quality one-to-one and small group tuition.

Carfax offers a structured learning environment and a friendly, responsive community. Here each pupil receives individual attention, support and encouragement, not only in pursuit of academic goals but also in terms of their personal well-being. Whether studying towards A-levels, GCSEs or other qualifications, revising for an exam or re-sitting one, pupils benefit from personalized programmes with teaching closely matched to their goals and needs, including specialized provision for those with special educational needs. Younger pupils follow an independent curriculum that has been expertly designed to prepare them for progression to leading senior schools.

With a rich cultural heritage at its doorstep, and sporting and cultural societies flourishing across the city, Carfax encourages pupils to participate in a breadth of extra-curricular activities in the community. A range of accommodation options is also available.

Group courses begin in September and February, but individual courses can start at any time of the year. Short-term and part-time courses are also offered all year round, including weekends and holidays.

A-levels are a ‘gold standard’ qualification, recognized around the world by universities and employers as a mark of academic excellence. Most students take three A-levels, and most universities require this, but other numbers between two and five are not uncommon.

Studying for A-levels is a demanding process and normally takes two full years of study in a school or college setting. However, this structure does not suit everyone.

From 2001 to 2015, exams were ‘modular’ – each subject was divided into four to six sections, and those could be taken or re-taken individually over any length of time. Now, from 2016 through to 2019, all subjects are moving in batches to a ‘linear’ format, whereby all the examinations must be sat in one session at the end of the course.... [-]

International students will often need some help with their English. If embarking on an academic course is not possible without first showing an improvement in English, the pupil will be advised to begin with an intensive English course.

Carfax offers highly personalized English courses, with tuition targeted at those areas that need the most improvement. If the pupil aims to progress to an academic course, the teaching can be oriented towards the relevant subjects. If an individual course of study is being followed, the balance of the programme can be adjusted as the pupil advances, and lessons in academic subjects can be introduced as soon as the pupil reaches the appropriate level.... Carfax provides a wide range of courses for pupils applying to British and American universities, as well as those seeking entry to world-leading universities elsewhere.

Some pupils spend one-to-two years at the college, preparing for a set of A-Levels or other qualifications, as well as course-specific standardized tests (or, in the case of applicants to American universities, Advanced Placement (AP) and SAT), while others join for the weekend, evening, or holiday courses.

Carfax also offers a 'Foundation Programme', including (where required) English Language teaching, to prepare international pupils for entry to leading universities.

Courses are developed to cater to the specific needs of each pupil, depending on the universities he or she is seeking to enter.... [-]
