Umeå University, Umeå Institute of Design

Umeå Institute of Design provides five academic programmes focusing exclusively on industrial design and related specializations. Programmes range from Bachelors to Masters and Doctoral levels. We offer highly competitive, professional and international industrial design educational programmes supported by exceptional technical facilities and resources.

The Institute is organized within the Faculty of Science and Technology at Umeå University.

Bachelor Programme


The Institute offers a three-year Industrial Design Programme leading to a Bachelor’s degree worth 180 ECTS-credits.

This programme is run in Swedish and has no tuition fees.

Master Programmes


At Master’s levels, there are three internationally oriented and specialized two-year programmes leading to a Master’s degree comprising 120 ECTS-credits.

The three disciplines are:

  • Advanced Product Design
  • Interaction Design
  • Transportation Design

The master programmes are run in English and are open to international students.

International Students


Students from all over the world are currently enrolled in our Master's programmes creating a unique blend of creative energy and cross-cultural enrichment.

Currently, we have students from 29 countries including Norway, Canada, Denmark, UK, India, Turkey, Japan, Brazil, Mexico, Sweden, Finland, Korea, China, Germany and USA.

More than half of the MA students come from other countries than Sweden. About 30% of all our students are women.

Cooperation with the Industry


In all four programmes, the Institute cooperates regularly with a number of companies and organizations including Saab, Volvo Trucks, Volvo Cars, Ericsson, Nokia, ABB, Electrolux and Husqvarna, several of which are also strongly involved with the Institute’s research programmes.

Single Subject Courses


Umeå Institute of Design also offers a number of single subject courses in industrial design and related topics and those courses are available for students from other departments at the University.

Research and Doctoral Studies


For a number of years, the Institute has carried out applied research and development work, organized into two areas: The Interaction Design Lab (IDL) and the Volvo Research Programme (SET). Since the autumn of 2001, we also offer doctoral studies in industrial design.

Industrial Design Intensive is a one-year course package that runs over a whole study year, from autumn to spring term. The autumn term is dedicated to basic methods in industrial design with focus on the product design process, while the spring term includes basics in interaction design, service design and design management.

The goal of the course is that the student should acquire basic knowledge about, and understanding of, the methods and proceedings that are used within industrial design. Special attention is given to the product development process but other areas of industrial design are also integrated in the course, such as interaction design, service design and design management. The course is mainly focused on methods for analysing problems, methods for ideation and creativity and methods for visualisation, presentation and communication.... [-]
