BCA Academy is the education and research arm of the Building and Construction Authority (BCA), Singapore. Since its establishment in 1984, BCA Academy has been providing quality training and education pathways for a diverse group of audience. It offers a wide range of built environment programmes which are rigorous and practice-oriented. At BCA Academy, training pedagogy is enhanced through various on-campus learning galleries and experiential learning features of the training facilities. Through the years, the Academy has been producing quality graduates who excel in their jobs. BCA Academy also partners with established universities to deliver leadership programmes to develop the managerial and technical competencies of the industry leaders, who play a crucial role to future-proof the built environment sector.

The building and construction industry is a key pillar of the Singapore economy.

It delivers the world-class buildings and infrastructure necessary to sustain our economic development and growth. The industry also provides employment for a large number of people in a wide range of jobs, professions and businesses. Thus, it is imperative for us to nurture and develop a professional, progressive and productive workforce, capable of delivering good quality projects at competitive prices, in a timely and safe manner. As the education and research arm of the Building and Construction Authority, the BCA Academy plays a leading role in helping the industry to acquire new skills and capabilities.

The BCA Academy offers a wide range of programmes for the training of personnel in the industry at all levels, from construction tradesmen and supervisors to technicians, managers and professionals. To support the national agenda on various fronts, such as raising construction productivity and promoting sustainable development, the Academy has also developed training frameworks to groom competent professionals and workers in these fields, e.g. “green” professionals and BIM managers. The training programmes include Masters and Undergraduate Programmes (in collaboration with reputable universities), Diploma and Specialist Diploma Programmes, and Certification Courses.

The BCA Academy has seen strong growth over the last few years. To cater to the increasing student population and to provide a more conducive learning experience, the campus will be re-developed and expanded over the next few years.

The BCA Academy is the education and research arm of the Building and Construction Authority (BCA), Singapore.

Founded in 1984 as the Construction Industry Training Centre (CITC), its main role was to train craft workers for the rapidly growing construction industry. In 1994, the Centre was renamed as the Construction Industry Training Institute (CITI) and was moved to its purpose-built campus at Braddell Road. CITI was restructured and transformed to become the BCA Academy in 2007. Whilst the training of tradesmen for the construction industry remains a key focus, the BCA Academy now takes on the new challenge to equip professionals, managers, executives and technicians with the knowledge, skills and competency to spearhead the growth and transformation of the built environment into one that is safe, high-quality, sustainable and friendly.

Today, the BCA Academy is possibly the only institution in the world that provides a full range of training and education programmes tailored to meet the diverse needs of the built environment industry at all levels.

A Lifelong LEARNING JOURNEY

At the BCA Academy, we offer a life-long learning journey for individuals who are keen to establish a career in the built environment. The progression chart shows the possible educational pathways for individuals who wish to acquire or upgrade their skills and qualifications for their academic and career progression.

ACADEMIC PROGRAMMES

The BCA Academy offers a wide range of academic programmes, in full-time or part-time mode, to cater to the diverse needs of its students.

The BCA Academy has launched a one-year Foundation Programme that caters to Secondary 4 students from the Normal stream who have done well for their GCE ‘N’ Level examinations. The programme is designed to better prepare them for entry into the relevant BCA Academy Diploma programmes. For GCE ‘O’ Level holders who wish to pursue a career in the built environment, there are diploma programmes with curricula which are practice-oriented and tailored specifically to the needs of the built environment.

For executives and managers working in the industry, there are Specialist Diploma Programmes which focus on specialist knowledge in niche areas in the built environment industry.

For qualifications upgrading, there are also Bachelor and Master Degree Programmes which nurture and develop managerial and technical capability in niche areas, such as green building design, renewable energy, technology, building and project management, and sustainable facility and environment management.

Over the years, the BCA Academy has developed many customised training programmes for overseas delegates from public and private institutions. To date, more than 1,700 delegates from Southeast Asia, Asia, Middle East, Africa, Europe, Latin America and other regions had attended short-term customised courses at the BCA Academy to acquire knowledge in green building design, building control framework, urban planning and design, sustainable development practices and construction skills training.

On 14 November 2014, BCA has unveiled its new extension to the Academy as it continues to lay the foundations for a future-ready built environment for Singapore. With the new extension, the BCA Academy will become a living lab for built environment disciplines and professions, the first of its kind in Singapore.

Future students of the Academy will learn and experience about how a building "lives", "breathes", functions and "interacts" with its occupants, thanks to features that facilitate experiential learning.

Using their experience and extensive knowledge of the construction process, they are responsible for all procurement activities as well as the monitoring and controlling of construction-related costs of different types of building projects. Quantity Surveyors play an increasingly critical role in all building projects within the construction industry. Using their experience and extensive knowledge of the construction process, they are responsible for all procurement activities as well as the monitoring and controlling of construction-related costs of different types of building projects. Quantity Surveyors work closely with other professionals such as the Architects and Engineers to successfully deliver building projects that meet the cost and quality objectives of their clients.

To meet the increasing demand for more Quantity Surveyors in the construction industry, BCA Academy will launch a new Diploma in Quantity Surveying in April 2013 to train more qualified professionals in this building discipline. This Diploma in Quantity Surveying will provide students with a strong foundation in construction technologies and processes as well as train them in important areas such as contractual laws and administration, quality management systems and Building Information Modeling, etc. The students will also be required to undergo a 12-week industry attachment at the end of the diploma programme in order to gain valuable work experience to prepare them to begin their Quantity Surveying Careers....
