The Jagiellonian University, founded in 1364, is the oldest university in Poland and the second oldest institution of higher education in Central and Eastern Europe. It was here that the Cracow School of the Law of Nations was developed in the 15th century (an early form of contemporary international law). Then, at the beginning of the 19th century, the Department of Political Skills was established at our university. After Poland regained independence, the School of Political… [+] Science (SPS) was established within the Faculty of Law in 1920. It was based on the Free School of Political Science (École Libre des Sciences Politiques) in Paris. The activity of the SPS was halted by the onset of WW II, and underground education was organized in its place. Although the school resumed its operation in 1946, it was closed by communist authorities in the late 1940s. In 1969, the Institute of Political Science (IPS) was established at the Faculty of Law. In the year 2000, the Faculty of International and Political Studies was founded. It was divided into four units: (1) the Institute of Political Science (mentioned above); (2) the Institute of Ethnic Studies and Polish Diaspora (established in 1972); (3) the Institute of Regional Studies; and (4) the School of Polish Language and Culture (operating as part of the faculty until 2005). One of the main purposes for establishing the new Faculty was to combine academic and didactic efforts undertaken by various groups of academic researchers at the university in the field of political and international developments – as seen from legal, historical, philosophical, sociological, and cultural perspectives. With time, new units were established within the faculty, often as a result of the reorganization of previously existing units. In 2004, the Institute of American Studies and Polish Diaspora (which also included the Interfacultative Department of American Studies, founded in 1991) and the Institute of European Studies (which emerged from the Interfacultative Department of European Studies, established in 1993) were founded. In 2005, the Institute of Russian and East European Studies was founded. In 2005, the Division of Ukrainian Studies (established in 2000) became an independent unit of the Faculty. Pursuant to a decree issued by the President of the Jagiellonian University in 2006, the Centre for Chinese Language and Culture, otherwise known as "The Confucius Institute in Krakow," become part of the faculty. In 2008, the Centre for Holocaust Studies has founded out of the Holocaust Studies Unit established in 1996. In 2010, the Division of the Middle and Far East (established in 2000) became the Institute of the Middle and the Far East. In the same year, the Centre for Lithuanian Studies was established. In 2012 the Centre for Quantitative Research in Political Science was established on the initiative of the Faculty of International and Political Studies and the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science. Also in 2012, the Jagiellonian University Polish Research Centre was established in London with the help of researchers from the Faculty. In 2013 the Institute for Regional Studies was reformed as the Institute of Intercultural Studies. The Jagiellonian Centre for Migration Studies was also opened that year. In 2014, the Jagiellonian Centre for African Studies was established. Faculty Units Basic units: Institute of American Studies and Polish Diaspora, Institute of the Middle and the Far East, Institute of European Studies, Institute of Political Science and International Relations, Institute of Russian and East European Studies, Institute for Intercultural Studies, Division of Ukrainian Studies, Centre for Holocaust Studies, Centre for Chinese Language and Culture ("Confucius Institute in Krakow"), Centre for Lithuanian Studies. Interfacultative units Centre for Quantitative Research in Political Science, Jagiellonian Centre for Migration Studies Other units Jagiellonian University Polish Research Centre in London, Guest House Jagiellonian University The Jagiellonian University educates on the three levels: Ordinary, Masters, and Doctoral, following the principles of the Bologna Process. There are well over a hundred degrees and specialities available in Polish, as well as over a dozen in English. The European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) has been implemented in all courses and specialities, enabling trouble-free linking of studies at UJ with studies in other European countries. Together with the development of co-operation with a number of universities worldwide, this has enabled a great increase in student mobility.
The Centre for European Studies at the Jagiellonian University traces its history to the founding of the Inter-Faculty ‘Unit' (Zakład) for European Studies at the Jagiellonian University in 1993. In the 1990s, this research institute offered open lectures and classes in both Polish and English, but no stand-alone degree programmes. In 1999, the Unit was transformed into the ‘Centre' (Katedra) for European Studies, part of the Faculty of Philosophy of the Jagiellonian Univ… [+] ersity. In the 2000-2001 academic year, the Master's degree programmes (in both Polish and English) were launched. In 2001, the Centre for European Studies was invited into the newly-created Faculty of International and Political Studies of the Jagiellonian University and was part of the Institute for Regional Studies; however by 2004, the Centre grew in size, scope and popularity, ultimately elevating itself to the rank of the ‘Institute' of European Studies. The 'Centre for European Studies' now refers to the English-language programmes based at ul. Garbarska 7a and is a part of the Institute of European Studies, now located in Przegorzały. The undergraduate study abroad programme at the Centre for European Studies is a continuation of the School of Central and Eastern European Studies (SCEES), which although founded in 1994 as a separate inter-faculty unit, ceased to operate in 1999. Facilities The Centre for European Studies is based at ul. Garbarska 7a and offers excellent study facilities for students, including a Reading Room, Computer Lab and Student Lounge. The majority of classes take place at ul. Garbarska and at Auditorium Maximum. Curriculum Development Projects The Centre for European Studies is proud to present the curriculum development projects for which it has gained the support from the ARENA Centre for European Studies at the University of Oslo and the International Visgegrad Fund. Research Networks The Centre for European Studies/Institute of European Studies is an active participant in Europe-wide research networks, and we work hard to bridge the gap between teaching and research by organising guest lectures with visitors from within these networks. RECON (Reconstituting Democracy in Europe), a five-year research project with 21 partner institutions and more than 100 participating researchers, is a project that CES faculty is very engaged in. The project covers a wide range of academic fields, from political science, sociology, linguistics, and anthropology, to information science, law and legal theory, and economics. The coordinator of RECON is ARENA Centre for European Studies at the University of Oslo, also our partner on the Europeanisation and Governance in Central and Eastern Europe programme.

Established in 1819, the world’s first business school, ESCP Europe was founded by a group of economic scholars and businessmen including the well-known economist Jean-Baptiste Say and the celebrated trader Vital Roux. Jean-Baptiste Say was an advocate of economic liberalism and is often credited with having coined the concept of entrepreneurship as early as 1800. Vital Roux is particularly known for having largely contributed to the elaboration of the Commercial Code in 1… [+] 807 as well as for his up-front thinking in innovative pedagogy. One can, therefore, say that the creation of ESCP Europe represents the invention of the "business school" concept. Although the ESCP Europe brand evolved over its almost 200 years of history, it always remained loyal to its first three letters. Starting in 1819 under the name Ecole Spéciale de Commerce et d’Industrie and soon after renamed Ecole Supérieure de Commerce, it developed to ESCP fifty years later in 1869. After merging with its sister school, the European School of Management (EAP), in 1999, the school was called ESCP-EAP for about a decade. Finally, in 2009, the school’s name turned into ESCP Europe, making explicit reference to its European heritage and positioning. The international scope of ESCP Europe has been visible since its early age. Already the class of 1824 counted 30% of international students with 15 different nationalities, amongst them seven Spanish, five Brazilians, five Dutch, four Germans, and two Americans. Language education was an essential part of its first curriculum which included, in addition to French grammar, also courses in English, German, and Spanish. As of 1825, a total of ten languages were taught at ESCP Europe and students had to study at least three of them.Around one and a half centuries later, ESCP Europe was again a pioneer through the creation of a multi-campus business school. In order to respond to the School’s European calling, campuses in Germany and in the United Kingdom were opened in 1973, followed by Spain in 1988, Italy in 2004, and Warsaw in 2015. In the context of an ever more globalized world, the ambition of ESCP Europe today is to train truly European managers by fostering the link between humanistic values and management education. ESCP Europe becomes a veritable European School open to the World. Mission and Values ESCP Europe connects and shapes the business world by advancing cross-cultural management knowledge and practice. Teaching management from an interdisciplinary perspective at the highest level of academic excellence, we develop culturally intelligent, multilingual leaders, who are open-minded, adaptable and responsible. As managers and entrepreneurs, ESCP Europe's graduates are equipped to lead and inspire in a globalised world. Academic Centre through centuries Kraków has been known as a leading academic centre in Poland since the14th century. Although there is a great number of respectable universities in our country, it is Kraków that immediately evokes images of student comradery and professors strolling through the streets of Old Town. This centuries-long academic tradition goes hand in hand with modern approach to education and state-of-the-art technology. For instance, Ruczaj, one of the d… [+] istricts located on the outskirts of Kraków, is rapidly transforming into a thriving centre of student activity thanks to the 3rd Campus of the Jagiellonian University. The fact that most higher education institutions in the city are sited near one another allows for a very close cooperation—not only scientific, but also related to culture and leisure. The Jagiellonian University is the oldest higher education institution in Poland and one of the oldest in Europe. It was founded on 12 May 1364 by the Polish king Casimir the Great. The Jubilee year 2014 marked the 650th anniversary of this remarkable event. Since its very beginning, the Jagiellonian University has been an international institution. Poles, Ruthenians, Lithuanians, Hungarians, Germans, Czechs, the Swiss, the English, the Dutch, the French, the Spanish, Italians, and even Tatars studied here in the old days. Jagiellonian University today Today, the Jagiellonian University comprises 16 Faculties, where nearly 4 thousand academic staff conduct research and provide education to over 40 thousand students, within the framework of more than 80 different fields of study. The eminent researchers and state-of-the-art infrastructure make the JU one of the leading Polish scientific institutions, collaborating with major academic centres from all over the world. The Jagiellonian University is also home to about 150 student societies, where young researchers pursue their academic interests and develop friendships with people who share their passion. The most unique large-scale projects run by the Jagiellonian University include the Jagiellonian Centre for Experimental Therapeutics, Małopolska Centre for Biotechnology, Molecular Biotechnology for Health, OMICRON, and Synchrotron Radiation Centre “Solaris”. Research excellence The university's prestige in both Poland and abroad is illustrated by its widely recognised research achievements. The scientists and physicians from the JU Medical College carry out pioneer studies, e.g. in cardiac surgery, urology and neurology, often leading to the development of novel treatment methods. Their findings have been published in some of the most prestigious international journals, for instance European Journal of Cardio-Thoracic Medicine, New England Journal of Medicine, and Lancet. JU archaeologists explore the secrets of ancient sites in various parts of the world, including Egypt, Cyprus, Central America, South Asia and Altay. The astronomers take part in the most important international projects in their field, including H.E.S.S. and VIPERS, whereas the results of research by JU biotechnologists have been published in such reputable specialist journals as Bioorganic and Medicinal Chemistry, Molecular Ecology Resources or European Journal of Human Genetics. These are only some examples of remarkable successes for which the Jagiellonian University has been famous in recent years. The current position of the JU is also reflected in the growing number of patent applications and the growing number of patents granted to its academic staff members—there were 8 applications and 2 patents in 2007 and as many as 60 applications and 11 patents in 2013. Unsurprisingly, the Jagiellonian University staff have been honoured with a number of prestigious distinctions and awards, including the elite awards of the Foundation for Polish Science (“Polish Nobel Prizes”) bestowed upon JU professors: Jan Woleński, Tomasz Guzik, and Jan Potempa during the years 2010–2013. Live and learn in Kraków Kraków's location is unique for several reasons. In addition to having all the benefits of a large city, including very well developed public transportation, easy access to hostels and student dormitories, and numerous shopping malls and restaurants, Kraków is also very close to the Tatra Mountains (with many ski resorts and trekking routes near Zakopane), beautiful national parks—Pieniny and Ojców, and Dunajec River Gorge, which offers some interesting rafting opportunities. Additionally, Kraków is not very far from other European capitals, such as Prague and Vienna, so weekend trips to neighbouring countries pose no problem to keen travellers. Kraków is also an important transport hub, with quick and comfortable bus, train and plane connections to other cities, both in Poland and abroad. Vibrant job market Because Kraków's universities train highly qualified specialists in all kinds of fields, it is not at all surprising that businesses are very frequently set up in the region. International investors establish branches of their corporations in the area to ensure the influx of trained specialists. This offers prospective students a multitude of opportunities to develop careers in their desired professions. City of kings Kraków is the historical capital of Poland, and as such, it is very deeply rooted in Polish tradition and culture. There is almost a tangible feel of history in the atmosphere of Kraków, while at the same time it is also very vivid and teeming with life. Galleries, museums, theatres, a philharmonic and an opera house—all these places offer unforgettable experiences to art aficionados. Small wonder that Kraków attracts thousands of tourists every year, regardless of season. The meeting place Despite its traditional nature, Kraków is not only about history. It is, first and foremost, a melting pot of diverse cultures, where people from all over the world meet to share their knowledge, experience, and friendship. Numerous clubs and pubs guarantee quality entertainment in a welcoming environment—be it in the open, spacious area of the Market Square, or mysterious, narrow alleyways of Kazimierz. Clubs are located close to one another, so hardened merrymakers may find themselves devoting entire evenings to exploring new places. Cultural, musical and film festivals, many of which are organised by students, also liven up the city.
The Faculty of Biochemistry, Biophysics, and Biotechnology (FBBB) is one of the youngest and most dynamically expanding units of the Jagiellonian University. It is also a leading scientific and educational institution in Poland, recognized all over the world in the field of modern biology. The FBBB was established in 2002, following the expansion of the Jan Zurzycki Institute of Molecular Biology which had been growing since the 1970s. Nowadays, the faculty comprises 17 departments… [+] and employs 150 scientists. The FBBB offers programmes leading to Bachelor's, Master and PhD degrees in the field of biotechnology, biophysics, biochemistry and bioinformatics. International students are welcome to attend a two-year Master's programme in English. The FBBB's building is located on the III JU Campus. In the close vicinity of the FBBB, there are other JU faculties of life sciences, as well as Jagiellonian Centre for Experimental Therapeutics, Małopolska Centre of Biotechnology and the newly-opened National Synchrotron Radiation Centre SOLARIS. Thanks to successful research and structural grant applications the FBBB scientists have an easy access to the state-of-the-art equipment and modern technologies, which let them focus on the problems most pertinent to modern society. The Jagiellonian University, often shortened to JU (historical names include: Studium Generale, University of Kraków, Kraków Academy, The Main Crown School, and Main School of Kraków) was established in 1364 by the Polish king Kazimierz the Great. It is the oldest university in Poland, the second oldest university in Central Europe and one of the oldest universities in the world. The Jagiellonian University comprises 16 faculties offering about hundred degrees and specialities in Polish, as well as over a dozen in English. Approximately 50,000 students enrol in Bachelor, Master, PhD and no-degree study courses every year. The European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) has been implemented in all courses and specialities, enabling trouble-free linking of studies at JU with studies in other European countries.
