Welcome to Bifröst University

Bifröst University was founded in Reykjavík in 1918 on the model of Ruskin College. In 1955, the school was moved 110km north of the capital. Bifröst University is the only Liberal Arts university in the country. It was accredited as a university in 1988, first only in Business, eventually offering degrees in Law 2002 and in Social Science since 2005. Bifröst University is a private, self-governing, non-profit institution, which receives around 40% of its income from the Icelandic state, 40% from tuition fees and 20% from other sources. Alumni from include many prominent entrepreneurs and leaders in Icelandic business and politics, including the Prime Minister of the country. Bifröst University also offers a one-year pre-university level preparatory study program for students lacking full university entrance qualifications, as well as various life-long learning programs including successful programs for retail management, for tourism and one for people working in local government. Many undergraduate students spend one or more terms abroad at partner universities in America, Asia, and continental Europe. Bifröst University is an active member of the Icelandic and international research communities and prides itself on recruiting faculty with broad research profiles in the social sciences. The university hosts many independent research centers, for example, Centre for European Studies, Centre for Retail Studies and Research Centre of Cultural Management. Bifröst has to lead many research projects funded by the Icelandic Research Council in addition to projects funded by the EC Research Framework program. Bifröst also has also participated in many academic networks of the COST and ERASMUS programs, as well as the Northern Periphery program.

This program will take place from June 29 to July 13, 2019. On June 29th, an orientation session given by the Program Coordinator will introduce the participants to the program and the campus. The welcome dinner will take place on the evening of June 29th.

The University organizes a bus pick-up from Reykjavik to Bifröst on June 28th at 18:00 so participants are advised to book their flight tickets for arrival in Iceland on June 27th or 28th.

Leadership and Gender Equality in the 21st century Bifröst University Iceland June 29 - July 20

It is a well-known fact that women are underrepresented in top tier role e.g., in business, politics and academia, fields that thereby forego a vast resource of leadership potential. Lack of diversity in terms of gender, race, religion and other aspects is, therefore, an ocean of lost opportunities and a general loss in terms of economic growth and general societal welfare. The core of this course revolves around leadership and leadership theories in the context of gender.

In the international political debate, Iceland is considered an excellent example of success in terms of gender equality, often considered as the ‘equality’s paradise’ and will be particularly discussed in comparison with other countries and parts of the world. Research has demonstrated that companies and institutions who are inclusive in terms of leadership and governance are outperforming others that do not demonstrate the same diversity. Furthermore, there is a correlation between gender equality and the level of societal welfare.... [-]

The Summer School 2019 Program

The Summer School is located in the natural paradise of Bifröst Village in West Iceland, right between a volcano and a glacier. Students are accommodated in comfortable single and double rooms at the program´s beautiful campus on the shore of Lake Hreðarvatn.

The three-week program (8 ECTS / 4 US Credits) offers high-level Leadership studies with an emphasis on Sustainability.

The Summer School will take place from July 13th to August 3rd, 2019.

The Summer School gives students Leadership training and prepares them for the challenges that future leaders will face.
