exMedia is an academic group which shares the conviction that: - experimental aesthetic projects and socio-technical research lead to an - expansion of scholarly and creative horizons that effectively address - existential human conditions in the 21st Century. exMedia integrates design, coding, sound, and animation. exMedia connects critical reflection with experimental approaches based on fundamental questions raised by individuals and society. exMedia looks for self-motivated students able to take artistic risks and open to the unknown. exMedia works on the conditions of a technology-driven culture and addresses its future including post-media perspectives. exMedia is involved with the following fields: Maker Culture, Hybrid Space, Cognitive and Transformation Design, Sound Studies, Experimental Coding, Politics of networks and machines, Experimental 2D/3D Animation and Auteur Games. In our postgraduate program, we work with students and fellows from a wide range of backgrounds such as architecture, urbanism, design, sound, computer science, animation, games, art, theory and social activism. The project-based studies environment challenges students to self-initiate individual research and develop complex and perhaps yet uncharted subjects and profiles. We run specialized sound and 2D/3D animation laboratories to ensure enthusiastic exploration and experimentation to further advance student’s imagination and talents. We also work with widely available tools such as an electonic microcontroller, laser cutter, motion capture, drones, 3D scanner/printer, CNC-milling machine. exMedia´s alumni engage across a wide terrain of creative fields. Professional prospects will be found both in the fields of independent and corporate work, at agencies as well as in research or start-ups. exMedia offers an unsurpassed opportunity of experiencing an exhilarating freedom of an art academy without being subjected to the ferocious rules of the art market.

Lab.D, which stands for Laboratory for Dimensional research, is a primary facility at the Academy of Media Arts Cologne, KHM for research and production of interdisciplinary projects dealing with 3D technologies and investigating space, time and play as a principal thematic field.

We are equipped to assist with conceptual grounding and idea-testing of the projects. Our scope is quite wide ranging from character animation to mobile technologies and site-specific gaming.

Animation is seen as an evolving concept to evolving art form, required by the handwerkliches- and design skills as well as have the will to experiment and artistic venture.

Each image form that involves movement, can be treated here. This includes all forms and materials of the visual arts, and its relation with other artistic disciplines such as theater or dance. Also a link to 3D animation is seen.

Content and form are developed in parallel: from traditional narrative forms and documentary to pure abstraction, from the teleplay for performance.

The presentation will be included in the design process. The sole production of canvas or screen is no longer selbverständlich.... [-]

A new interdisciplinary field of design, researching the transformations of architectural, urban/regional space of the emerging "information age", explores the dynamic interaction of architecture/urbanism and the space of mass media and communication networks. It develops scenarios for the interplay of public urban and public media space.

The products of these alliances of urban/regional and media networks, of architectural and media space, are bastards: ambivalent spaces that are at the same time analog and digital, tactile and abstract, material and immaterial, expanding hyper-sensuality in the time- and placelessness of media flows. These hybrid spatial morphs act simultaneously in urban (local) and media (global) space and mediate between them, unfolding the undefined space between the local and the global, occupying the vacuum between local place and global space. Within the inversions of identity (communication), within the fluid ever-changing densities in the knitted networks, fused analogue/digital cultures are idensified.... [-]

The Experimental computer science at the KHM asks for the basic requirements and possibilities of today's design and manufacturing.

In particular, the role of information processes and their interaction will be investigated with material processes. Where do they occur at all information and algorithms, as they are produced, communicated, processed and integrated into planning and manufacturing processes? How does human reason and perception with physical materials and how they are mediated by semiotic processes?

In short, the way in which they are mutually dependent reason and artifact and what role do the characters? The fact that so far no general science of artifacts exist, the so the "know-how" that go beyond mere questions of making, is regarded as one of the main reasons that our company has never really mastered the art intellectually. Not the technical "know-how" is therefore at the center of our thinking and experimental approach, but reflect on the conditions of the possibility producing action and the question under what stipulations we want to develop our resulting technologies at all and operate? ... In Klanglabor the KHM is a project-oriented sound practice combines with current sound discourses in the form of seminars, lectures, practical exercises or work presentations.

As interdisciplinary and modular organized place the sound laboratory provides both space for the development of artistic projects sound as well as for workshops on instrument making, musical production techniques or media archaeological topics. The range of seminars offered includes sound synthesis method in hardware and software (programming), the use of sensors, interface and app development, Radio Arts / Ars Acustica, Field Recording / soundscape composition, text-sound composition / Poetry Sonore, and theoretical reflection of auditory culture and music and art history. ... found both in the cultural studies in research and in the design sciences, the "Knowledge in / Knowledge in the making" increasingly interested. The exteriority of thought is observed in their dynamic development and the remuneration of thinking and doing as well as the role of artifacts involved to be reassessed. This development meets the tasks of structuring knowledge work in organizations that is increasingly seen as a design object.

Design Thinking

Here, a charting thought, currently called "Design Thinking" has proven economy. Thus there are two good reasons to re-consider the knowledge-forming functions of the design: On the one hand it is necessary to determine the knowledge in design clearer so that self-understanding of the discipline to improve and to connect with technical cultivation research. On the other hand, the functions of the design for the knowledge processes are working out of third parties to meet the demanding tasks of future knowledge design requirements. Both areas of responsibility are increasingly recognizing a diversity of thinking and working styles, design and modes of knowledge, knowledge and representation types (cognitive diversity). The design can use this base to reposition itself in the design of action and imaginative spaces of knowledge work (enabling spaces). It is the integrated design of knowledge, media and space as cognitive design, profound innovation (radical innovation) allows. The under the impact of emerging digital media early formulated concept of "knowledge designs" (Bolz 1993) learns as an update and clarification.... [-]
