The Copenhagen Institute of Interaction Design hosts a range of educational initiatives

Our educational activities present an integrated environment for participants, faculty, and staff to work together in a multicultural, multidisciplinary studio environment. The school attracts an impressive and diverse selection of International visiting faculty who are highly regarded as experts in their fields.

We continually develop our definition of interaction design through the evolving nature of our curricula. Led by a ‘learning by doing’ philosophy and a people-centered approach, students are encouraged to explore topics before generating ideas. These concepts are then prototyped in the well-equipped lab and workshop.

CIID provides a new model of education that is relevant for both academia and industry. Through collaborative Industry Partnerships and industry facing projects, students are exposed to a broad range of topics and real-world contexts.

CIID’s Summer School around the world provides participants with the opportunity to gain design and innovation skills and tools through a series of 5-day workshops. These workshops are facilitated by leading international experts across the fields of innovation, digital technology, and creative leadership. It is an immersive yet compact experience, that presents an opportunity for exploring the possibilities of design thinking, prototyping and the adaptation of emerging technologies. It is open to all and meant to enable students and professionals from all backgrounds to use interaction design skills and processes in their work/projects. So far the Summer School takes place in Denmark, Costa Rica and India, and we are open to taking it to other regions.

CIID’s Interaction Design Program (IDP) (1 year) teaches participants how to design & implement products, services, and environments – in line with CIID’s vision to inspire action towards better futures. We place faith in the diversity of experience, thinking and culture – and impart skills for teamwork, communication, and collaboration, not just technical and design skills. Following a rigorous selection process, we select people from all over the world to participate in our Interaction Design Program. Each person brings individual skills with them and the IDP is an effective platform for peer-to-peer learning. We have chosen Costa Rica as the first location for the Interaction Design Program outside of Denmark because the country is home to a staggering 6 percent of the world’s biodiversity. This makes it the perfect place to focus on life-centered solutions. Our aim is to learn from and build upon progressive innovation including the fact that the region currently generates more than 99 percent of its electricity using five different renewable sources: hydropower (78%), wind (10%), geothermal energy (10%), biomass, and solar (1%).

About

While human-centred design is becoming increasingly ubiquitous, designing for situations that question the status quo of what we know (topics relating to culture, identity, religion, or status, for example) doesn’t exactly have a guidebook. Designing for true inclusivity means investigating, understanding, and ultimately, elevating the things that make us different. This class will help you design for those differences by thinking about new ways to plan for discussions and collaborations with real users, explore the art of empathy, and apply those insights into to a tangible solution with a meaningful story. Jump into the belly of the beast, and expect lots of collaboration, experimentation, and learning through doing in this provocative workshop.... [-]

Connected products are increasingly taking over our daily lives. This workshop is an opportunity to focus on new meanings and opportunities for products to be connected. ... [+]

What are Connected Products?

Connected products are physical devices or things that have been embedded with sensors, software, data storage or general connectivity, allowing for the transfer of data or a service (user interface). Examples include wearable devices (now a multi-billion dollar industry) or smart home gadgets. Solving everyday problems with small connected products is fast becoming the norm, with myriad new opportunities arising each year within the ‘Internet of Things’ and technology becoming increasingly more intuitive and user-driven.

What will you learn? Different kinds of technologies and their potential in the context of connected devices. How to infuse a product with behaviors, services, and real-world user scenarios to get a sense of the complete product. Prototyping! Some basics of prototyping and fabrication like, 3d-modeling, 3d printing, Arduino, electronics, and making both functional and high-fidelity dummy apps. Concept/product communication skills. ... [-]

CIID Summer School Copenhagen 2018 from CIID on Vimeo.

What is this workshop?

The Design for Behaviour & Impact workshop will follow CIID’s learning by doing philosophy and a people-centered approach to introduce students to behavioral science through the lens of interaction design. The workshop will investigate how a behavioral research and design process can help interaction designers gain a better understanding of people’s decision-making processes and create products and services with higher rates of adoption and usage.

What will you learn? Better understand how people make decisions by introducing concepts and lessons from the field of behavioral science. Practice strategies for designing products, services, and environments that address the behavioral biases of our users. Evaluate the effectiveness of our solution by measuring the influence (or lack thereof) of our designs on people’s behavior. Recognize implicit biases that we may have as individuals or teams and how they influence the decisions we make in our design process. ... [-]

What are Interactive Spaces?

We live in an amazing time where digital technology is beginning to take many different physical forms, with a rise in new interactions and sensorial experiences. Virtual and mixed reality offers a new take on these questions by letting us embed digital objects with properties from the physical world such as location, scale, and persistence in the world. How do these technologies work to create and augment environments?

What will you learn? Using your hands – learning to make physical prototypes of all scales, starting at the analog level, and working up to integrating digital components Analog and digital tools to create interactive experiences Prototyping skills and an understanding of how and when to use each technique Basic methodology to create an experience through user journeys, research, prototyping, user testing, body/brainstorming, workshopping, etc Practical idea generation and critical thinking methods How to create and use physical affordances, and how to design for action A vocabulary for virtual and mixed reality interaction design An ability to find and expand insights related to interactive environments Prototyping communication skills – learning how to create and use prototypes, and when (fidelity vs. content, contextual use) ... The art of emulating life: design across biological scales!

Workshop Dates: August 26-30, 2019

Faculty: Rebeca Mora & Monika Seyfried

What is this workshop?

At this point in our global ecological crisis, the survival of humanity will require a fundamental shift in our attitude toward nature: from finding out how we can dominate and manipulate nature to how we can learn from it. This course could be summed up as an awakening: reconnection with Nature of which we are part. Participants will know a tool of design, a scientific discipline, a creative method, a strategy for our survival and a movement with a distinctive character of sustainability. It will capture your imagination in a pragmatic and culturally transforming way. We will find sustainable and practical solutions to problems of daily life by emulating the countless recipes and strategies that nature has developed (bacteria, crustaceans, birds, plants, forests, etc.) in 3.8 billion years of evolution. This course involves an active search, a conscious foresight; it does not imply extracting from nature, it implies learning from it. Human beings are not simply observers of nature, as if we were looking at it from a bubble. We are 100% in nature. Therefore, ingenious and beautiful as well as the countless strategists on which this course is inspired, it is time to intensify the inventiveness and look for more practical applications and answers based on the sustainable, effective and even aesthetically attractive solutions that nature developed a long time ago. In general, designs, products,... [-]

As the natural ecology on which we depend shifts due to climate change, how do we adapt? How do we map and explore possible pathways for action in order to bridge the recent past, ongoing changes, and projected futures?

Workshop Dates: August 19-23, 2019

Faculty: Francesca Desmarais & Kelton Minor

What is this workshop?

Although carbon emissions continue to rise, global energy and consumption systems are in the midst of a transformation towards low carbon futures. But what happens in the meantime? How do we react to the climatic changes that we already see, changes which we expect to intensify in the coming decades: more frequent, intense weather events, prolonged droughts, rising sea levels, and more dangerous heatwaves? How do we address the indirect effects brought on by these changes, from changing disease vectors and shifting species habitats to human migration and relocation?... [-]
