The Cutting Room, owned by apparel and production expert, Liza Deyrmenjian, with over 25 years in the fashion industry, she has a talent for designing businesses that succeed.

The Cutting Room is where it all happens—ideation and design, pattern making, sourcing, sampling, and production. It is also where beginners and seasoned designers alike come together to better their skills and learn new ones with The Cutting Room’s Fashion Design and Merchandising Academy—The Cut.

With one foot in Vancouver and the other in New York City, The Cutting Room supports established fashion and lifestyle brands, coaches up-starts, and teaches the next generation of makers and doers through The Cut’s array of fashion design courses.

Students will learn how to draft, construct and manipulate fabrics utilizing a variety of specialty fabrics and finishes, including beading, lacework, and tailoring, as well as learn how to drape in jersey and silk.

At the completion of this module, you will draft and assemble two couture evening wear designs that reflect your personal design point of view and brand. This advanced course has entry requirements of a one-year Pattern Making course or equivalent.

Using fashion illustration techniques, you will gain skills in drawing the fashion figure, and be able to illustrate your designs on high fashion croquis, utilizing multimedia tools to implement color into the sketch. The entire fashion cycle and design process will be explored from conception, research, customer profile, and mood, to inspiration and execution.

This 14-week module examines every aspect of pattern making and grading using Gerber AccuMark Pattern Design software (V10) and focuses on specific job responsibilities often assigned to apparel pattern makers and graders. [+]

Rather than focus solely on software commands, this class incorporates invaluable insight gained from the professor’s extensive experience as an industry insider. Lessons, exercises, and quizzes focus not only on teaching the software but also on preparing students to be successful industry professionals.

The first six weeks are dedicated to learning the fundamentals of pattern making, fit and sewing, and by Week 7 students choose their ‘design’ stream: active/technical wear, evening wear, contemporary women’s or menswear.

A small class size of 12 allows for individual attention, where we provide an industry-level professional environment and the opportunity for students to learn the necessary specialized skills through hands-on training by highly qualified professors.
