School of Film and Television

As Australia’s oldest and most respected university-based film school, Film and Television at the VCA attract and challenges a diverse cohort of students. Course in Animation 13 Week IntensiveStudents can expect an intensive, hands-on experience, bringing drawings, objects and images to life in both narrative and experimental contexts. Each student works from their own individual computer workstation within the VCA Animation Studio.

DatesClasses are held on Monday and Thursday evenings, 6pm to 9pm and some weekends. Also included are four animation-focused Saturday workshops: two of which will include animation industry guest speakers, plus two intensive practice based sessions.

Objectives and StructureThe course is designed for beginners and for people wishing to further develop existing skills. The small class size enables participants to work within a wide range of studio based practice methodologies and skill levels. Students will be exposed to techniques and materials, animation specific equipment and software. Course SummaryCombining lectures and practical workshops, Foundations’ part-time delivery schedule is geared to enable people already studying or working full-time access to many of Australia’s best film industry practitioners and educators within our state of the art facilities.Two short filming exercises (one Super 8 film, one Digital) plus one major short production will be individually written and directed by each student, adding three short films to your reel. Please refer to our downloadable brochure for a more detailed course breakdown (above). Reflecting the philosophy of our full-time programs, we deliver to the individual who is seeking to find their unique creative voice. While the emphasis is on training writer/director/editors, you will also develop your knowledge and practical skills by experiencing the myriad of essential roles required on a film or TV production crew, including producing, sound recording, cinematography and production design.This course provides emerging filmmakers with invaluable access to a wide range of industry professionals, empowering participants with the insight, confidence and connections required to move forward in this competitive industry.
