In keeping with its plan to retain international students while increasing the number of entering immigrants to 1,700 annually by the year 2022, the Newfoundland and Labrador government is debuting two new programs aimed at helping students and grads secure jobs in the province. Here’s a closer look at what to expect, as reported by CBC.
“A Great First Step”
Delivered by the Association for New Canadians (ANC), $392,000 will be designated for the Student Internship Pilot Program and the My First Job in Newfoundland and Labrador Pilot Program. The former will match full-time universities from select universities with 12-week placements at local businesses, while the latter will connect grads with 16-week positions.
As genetics master’s student in genetics and Dubai native Rizza Umali told the St. John's Morning Show of how the program will help her achieve her objective of attending medical school, “I do realize that this province has such a shortage of doctors, particularly in rural areas and to be able to be part of that and contribute to health care in our province would be a major goal for me.”
Experts are heralding the program for its potential in helping students lacking in work experience. Said Wanda Cuff-Young, VP of Work Global Canada Inc., “This is a great bridging program. Students can come out of academia without knowing how things work. Maybe they have never done a resume, or they didn’t volunteer during their studies, so they don’t have those skills and contacts they need to get started. This will help students a lot.”
But the benefits aren’t limited to students. Said Al Hawkins, minister of advanced education, skills and labor, in a press release, “International students and graduates who develop professional connections are more likely to stay here, enhancing the social vibrancy of our province and supporting economic growth.”
Echoed Cuff-Young, “This is new to business here. Something that helps businesses learn to deal with different cultures is very good. This will let businesses try someone for 12 weeks and give them confidence about the hire.”
