Our School of Public Health is renowned for its rigorous academic programs and commitment to community health. We offer a range of degrees, including Advanced Certificates in 4 areas within Public Health, a Master of Public Health (MPH) in 6 concentrations and a Master of Healthcare Administration (MHA) program each designed to provide a comprehensive understanding of public health and healthcare administration issues through a blend of theoretical knowledge and practical experience.

Admissions

Focus on urban and immigrant health in our graduate-level public health programs.

As a student in Downstate's School of Public Health, you'll study alongside physicians, nurses, physician assistants, and other health professionals, as well as recent college graduates and professionals seeking additional education. In addition to covering foundational public health topics, you'll also study community organization; sex, gender, race and ethnicity; and other elements of the urban and immigrant experience.

Scholarships and Funding

Lenard And Christine Szarek Fellowship Fund

The criteria to select awardees for the Lenard and Christine Szarek Fellowship Fund for SUNY Downstate School of Public Health (SPH) Master of Public Health (MPH) and Doctor of Public Health (DrPH) are presented below:

  • Academic Record: Applicants must submit an official transcript. Each applicant must also have completed 12 or more SPH academic credits with a Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.75 or greater.
  • Resume: Each applicant must submit a recent resume which delineates his or her academic and employment record.
  • Personal Statement: Each applicant must submit a personal statement of 1,000 words or less in which s/he delineates how the funding will assist him or her.
  • Letter of Recommendation: Each applicant must submit a Letter of Recommendation from a faculty member of the SUNY Downstate School of Public Health.

Faculty and student projects often include collaboration with our College of Medicine, College of Nursing, School of Health Professions, School of Graduate Studies, community-based organizations, and the University Hospital at Downstate and its affiliated hospitals and institutions. And you can join a host of community service-oriented student groups, including:

  • The Brooklyn Free Clinic (BFC), a student-run healthcare clinic that works with others to improve access to medical treatment.
  • The Street Medicine Outreach Association at Downstate, a student-led group that serves the homeless population near Downstate.
  • Project TEACH @ SUNY Downstate, which gives pediatric patients a chance to do fun science experiments with Downstate students.
  • Students Partnering and Reaching Kids (SPARK), a mentoring program that puts Downstate students into K–12 classrooms to teach life skills.
  • Students for Social Responsibility, a student-run service group that sponsors events such as flu shots and bone marrow drives.
