Introduction
The English as a Second Language Program offers classes to resident and international students who are learning English as a second or another language. SBCC credit ESL classes help students develop the language and academic skills necessary to help them meet their life, career, and academic goals.
ESL classes are offered from beginning to advanced levels necessary to enter community college classes in English and take other college classes. The program helps students develop their reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills in English and also offers classes that focus on specific skills that support learning such as grammar and editing, basic computer skills for writing, conversation practice, listening, speaking, and notetaking for academic courses, and English to enter specific career programs such as Early Childhood Education and Environmental Horticulture.
Incoming credit ESL students take part in a placement process in order to determine their appropriate ESL level. Students don’t need to take the TOEFL and will be ready to enroll in college-level courses when they complete the ESL Program.
Would you like to improve your English to make progress toward personal, professional and academic goals? The SBCC ESL Department welcomes all English language learners to take credit ESL courses. We help students with the English communication skills necessary to progress in an American community college environment.
This series of courses is designed to aid the resident and international student, for whom English is a second or foreign language. Students do not need to take the TOEFL and can enroll in regular college courses after studying ESL. This program offers courses for beginning to advanced students.

We offer classes in the day, evening and online. Students study grammar, speaking, listening, reading, vocabulary and writing. SBCC ESL teachers, office staff, peer advisors and tutors are all here to help you! In addition, credit ESL students use the many resources available through the beautiful SBCC Main Campus.
SBCC offers a Transfer Agreement Guarantee (TAG). A TAG is a contractual agreement between the student, SBCC, and specific four-year colleges or universities. This includes six University of California ( *UC) institutions, six California State Institutions (CSU), seven California private institutions, nine out-of-state institutions, as well as Honors Transfer Agreements with ten institutions and 8 CSUs without campus impaction. Students must enroll in the TAG program and work with a TAG advisor. Please click here to learn more on the TAG program website.
