Introduction
The Salem School of Education offers a Certificate of Advanced Studies in Educational Leadership designed for experienced, licensed, professional educators (teachers, counselors, etc.) who have earned education related master’s degrees and are now ready to pursue new leadership roles within their schools or school districts. This is an accelerated program that prepares students for licensure as principals, district supervisors, and superintendents at all educational levels (Pre-K through Adult).
The Certificate of Advanced Studies in Educational Leadership program offers two paths to licensure.
- The Principal Track is an 18-hour program that consists of 7 months of coursework. Completion of the program leads to licensure as PreK-Adult Principal.
- The Full Certification Track is a 24-hour program that consists of 11 months of coursework. Completion of the program leads to licensure as PreK-Adult Principal, General Supervisor, and Superintendent.
The Certificate of Advanced Studies in Educational Leadership program prepares students with courses to develop the practical skills and knowledge necessary for school and school district leadership. Annual student pass rates on the required licensure exam consistently exceed 97%. All coursework includes fieldwork or internship experiences that can be completed in your school or district. The program utilizes the unique relationship that exists between a leadership candidate, their employing school district, and the University.
The Salem School of Education is nationally accredited under the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) Standards through the CAEP accreditation system The Master of Education in Educational Leadership program is approved by the West Virginia Department of Education and is nationally recognized by the Educational Leadership Constituent Council (ELCC). This designation will facilitate a more effective path to licensure in your home state.

Curriculum
Program courses are delivered in a monthly format and completed online with fieldwork and internships conducted in the student’s home school and district. Content courses are 1-month in duration and internship courses extend over 2-months. Courses are structured to work within the constraints of full-time employment, allowing you to earn your degree with minimum disruption to your classroom and students.
