Introduction

The Communication Studies Associate of Arts degree program prepares students to transfer into the junior year at four-year colleges in speech, communication, media production, and journalism. It also prepares students for entry-level jobs in some communication fields such as video production, journalism, and media communication. This program includes required courses in speech, communication theory, and mass media, as well as electives in specialized fields such as interpersonal and intercultural communications, journalism, public relations, film studies, and video production. At the same time, this program offers students a solid liberal arts education.

Graduates of the program have transferred to such prestigious schools as the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, The College of New Jersey, Rutgers University, and Seton Hall University.

Communication students are encouraged to pursue an experiential component in their studies by participating in a co-op, internship, or service-learning project in a communication field.

Graduates are able to:

  • organize and deliver effective oral presentations.
  • identify and apply basic models of verbal and nonverbal communication to various communication contexts.
  • identify and analyze the impact of mass media on society and self.
  • use communication theory to analyze communication situations within and across cultures.

The RVCC Advantage for International Students

Personalized Attention

Step into a classroom and you’ll feel like you belong. Unlike at larger colleges and universities where you’re just a number in a large lecture hall being taught by a teaching assistant, at RVCC our classes average only 19 students and are taught by the professors themselves.

Scholarship Opportunities

International students are among the recipients of College scholarships. Every year the College awards $300,000 in scholarships to students based on academic achievement and financial need. Our innovative Galileo Scholarship provides faculty mentors and internship opportunities, as well as financial support, for students majoring in science, math, engineering, or technology.

Leadership Opportunities

RVCC offers numerous ways for you to hone your leadership skills. Consider joining the Student Government Association, representing the College as a Student Ambassador, or becoming an officer in a student club or leader of an athletics team. RVCC recently became a member of the National Society of Leadership and Success, the largest leadership honor society in the nation.

Vibrant, Diverse Student Life

At RVCC you’ll be part of a tight-knit community filled with a world of experiences – both social and intellectual. We have more than 50 clubs and organizations and nine athletic teams. From lecture series to student performances, to life-changing community service opportunities, to clubs and organizations of all skills and interests, the student experience at RVCC is boundless.
