Certificate in Business Administration

The Certificate in Business Administration course offered by NCBA which leads to the FETAC Level 5 Certificate in Business Studies (BBSXX) major award is designed to provide students with a general qualification in business. This qualification will present opportunities to work in diverse areas such as administration, retail, human resources, marketing and IT. It will provide graduates with a high standard of training and assessment leading to a recognised qualification for those pursuing a career in the business sector.

Entry Requirements:

  • A learner seeking entry to this Level 5 programme does not need a previous formal qualification but should have relevant work or life experience.
  • Potential learners are expected to have evidence of their proficiency in English or to have engaged in at least one year of an English Language programme.

Business Studies Certificate Modules

1. Communications:

Learners who successfully complete this module will:

  • Develop an awareness of the essential role played by communication in human interaction
  • Acquire communication skills relevant to vocational and personal development
  • Understand the communicative principles and practices involved in gathering and relaying information
  • Acquire the skills and confidence to convey and interpret meaning, in writing, orally and visually
  • Develop a critical awareness of communications messages and media
  • Explore the use of modern communication and information technology, and its application in personal and vocational life.


2. Work Experience:

Learners who successfully complete this module will:

  • Develop critical awareness of the changing nature of work
  • Set achievable goals for work experience
  • Utilise learning opportunities presented in the work environment
  • Apply work skills to consolidate learning in the vocational area
  • Understand how work is planned and organised at different levels in a specific vocational area
  • Appreciate the importance of safety and welfare in the workplace
  • Develop capabilities, both personal and vocational, to successfully meet challenges in the workplace
  • Review career choices in the light of their own aspirations, experience, abilities and available options
  • Explore future employment opportunities (including opportunities for self-employment, contract work, work in the social economy, etc).


3. Business Administration:

Learners who successfully complete this module will:

  • Develop an understanding of the structure of an organisation
  • Appreciate the impact of the factors which affect a business organisation
  • Understand the financial aspects of business administration
  • Appreciate the functions of human resources within a business organisation
  • Undertake administrative duties in relation to meetings
  • Process business documents (in relation to sales, purchases, stock control and insurance).

4. Customer Service:

Learners who successfully complete this module will:

  • Understand the role of customer service in organisational effectiveness
  • Understand the role and responsibilities of a representative of an organisation and work effectively as part of a team
  • Acquire a range of verbal and non- verbal skills in order to meet customer needs, handle customer complaints and deliver good customer care
  • Become familiar with consumer protection legislation
  • Appreciate the rights of all customers regardless of gender, marital status, family status, sexual orientation, religion, age, disability, race or culture.

5. Behavioural Science :

Learners who successfully complete this module will:

  • identify the factors which influence perception
  • understand how consumers learn about company products and services
  • explain the motivation for different purchasing decisions
  • investigate the extent to which personality influences purchasing decision making
  • understand the formation of attitude and change in consumer decision making
  • analyse the impact of social groups and social class on behaviour
  • appreciate the influence of cultural differences (nationally and internationally) on business practices
  • understand the interaction of individuals and groups within organisations


6. Human Resources:

Learners who successfully complete this module will:

  • understand how the Human Resource Management function has evolved and developed
  • explain the recruitment and selection process
  • be capable of designing job descriptions and person specifications for approval by a Human Resource Manager.
  • understand how short listing of candidates for interview is carried out
  • be capable of planning and structuring job interviews
  • appreciate recruitment and selection techniques
  • demonstrate how to develop various Human Resource policies and procedures in an organisation
  • appreciate issues involved in dealing with employees at work.



7. Personal Effectiveness in the Workplace:

Learners who successfully complete this module will:

  • be familiar with the organisation in which they are active
  • understand their own role within the organisation
  • appreciate the influence of the organisation on their own day to day activity
  • develop a range of skills relevant to their daily activity
  • work effectively within the organisation.



8. Marketing Practice:

Learners who successfully complete this module will:

  • be familiar with the principles and practices of marketing
  • be able to work effectively as a marketing assistant
  • understand the functions of a marketing department
  • understand the role of marketing in everyday life.
