Introduction
Welcome to the ESL Center at Kent State University. The ESL Center provides intensive English language instruction to students who want to enter academic programs at American universities or learn English for other personal or professional reasons.
The ESL Center at Kent State University is committed to academic excellence through flexibility in program design. All courses are available at various proficiency levels to ensure that students receive the best English training possible. All classes are taught by experienced instructors who have a passion for helping our students achieve their academic goals.
The ESL Center offers a quality, intensive language program with a variety of classes designed to complement each other as well as provide in-depth English language instruction. The intensive program consists of seven-week-long modules and allows students to develop those language skills needed in an academic environment.
All full-time students will enroll in three different courses during each seven-week module:
- Reading and Vocabulary
- Writing and Grammar
- Listening and Speaking
Initial placement is based on test scores only. Students will automatically advance to the next level through passing grades; they may skip one or several levels through excellent test scores at the end of a 7-week module. All students participate in first-time placement tests as well as in achievement exams at the end of each 7-week module.

Admissions
Curriculum
Core Skills Courses
Full-time students are required to take all 3 credit core classes at each level. If a student gets a “D” or “F” in a class, the class must be repeated.
Listening & Speaking: 3 credits at each level
Students develop oral communication skills (listening and speaking) for various communicative settings in academic and non-academic environments. Classes will focus on developing basic comprehension, pragmatic understanding, note-taking skills, and skills in expressing ideas verbally.
Writing & Grammar: 3 credits at each level
Students will learn about the process of writing and how to write different text genres, including journal entries, essays, and research papers. Students will practice writing independent and integrated short essays. Students will also learn how English phrases, clauses, and sentences are formed to support building fluency and accuracy when practicing speaking, listening, writing, and reading.
Reading & Vocabulary: 3 credits at each level
Students will improve their reading skills by finding and understanding main ideas, comprehending vocabulary from context, making inferences, summarizing, and other techniques. Note-taking, timed readings, and vocabulary building are important components of this course.
Summer Customized Workshop
The ESL Center offers customized workshops for the refinement of advanced English language and academic skills for those embarking on graduate degree programs in the United States. The per-person cost for enrollment in the workshops described here is $1,000 and is restricted to those taking part in pre-academic preparation programs.
Academic Speaking Skills Workshop
This 4-week workshop aims to refine the spoken communication skills of participants who will have the opportunity to practice listening and speaking in a dynamic environment that simulates graduate academic contexts.
Participants will make formal presentations and develop the ability to communicate effectively in spontaneous interactions for professional and practical purposes including expressing opinions, asking questions, repairing communication breakdowns, and improving clarity in spoken English. Topics will be relevant to the participants’ academic interests and academic professionalism.
Academic Writing Skills Workshop
This 4-week workshop promotes advanced skills in academic writing for American academic contexts. Cross-disciplinary reading materials will provide opportunities for vocabulary development and analysis of rhetorical moves in academic writing. Writing topics will be customized to the academic disciplines of individual participants and will include summarizing, paraphrasing, writing and responding to posts, and academic annotation and formatting skill development.
Participants will learn what plagiarism is and how to avoid it in their writing. Participants will also become familiar with how to do library database research.
Academic Skills Training Workshop
This 4-week workshop promotes advanced academic skills and cross-cultural awareness in adapting to U.S. academic culture. Workshop topics include but are not limited to: time management, study tools, project management, online/library database research & keeping track of materials, copyrights & plagiarism, citation styles & citation tools, conference presentations & professional organizations, doing research & publications, teaching skills development, virtual learning and teaching, campus life and culture, belonging, faculty expectations & classroom culture, mental health and well-being; personal safety, and using the international office.
