Introduction
The Trinity Cert TESOL is a qualification suited to those wishing to teach English as a second language, but possess little or no experience in doing so. This programme equips students with the basic skills and knowledge required for ESOL teachers. The programme also gives students a firm foundation for self-evaluation and opportunities for further professional development. It is also suitable for trained teachers who are not trained in TESOL.
The Trinity Cert TESOL can be taken as a stand-alone course, or as part of the Graduate Diploma of International Studies (GDIS). Details of each of these can be viewed below:
Stand-alone course structure
There are two parts to the course, the first being a Distance Education component, the second an on-campus course. The Distance Education component consists of a series of study guides with the accompanying tasks based on the three set texts. Trainees must complete this extramural study before they start the on-campus programme. The on-campus component is a five-week intensive course in which the syllabus is covered by a series of lectures, seminars, and workshops. Teaching practice is integrated by relating the course components to practical teaching of various ESOL classes.
Entry requirements
- Bachelor's degree preferred
- Trainees who are non-native speakers of English must have minimum level of English equivalent to IELTS 7.5 across all 4 bands.
- Trainees are selected by interview and a pre-course English language awareness task
Course dates
Applications are currently being taken for the following courses:
- June 1st 2016 - July 5th 2016*
Numbers are limited to 14 trainees per course. Applications should be made at least eight weeks in advance of the starting date of the course because of the distance education component of the course.

IPU New Zealand Trinity Short Courses
IPU New Zealand offers short-term intensive training courses for in-service teachers of English as a foreign language. Our programmes are fully customised to the needs of the teaching professionals that choose to update their knowledge with us. Our programmes are based on the CertTESOL requirements developed by Trinity College London, as well as on our extensive experience in providing EFL teacher training programs for groups such as those sponsored by the Ministry of Education of Vietnam, Tianjin University, China, Prince Royal College, Thailand and many more. Our courses also provide overseas teachers with the opportunity to deepen their knowledge of the English language, get acquainted with unique New Zealand culture and to gain a wealth of new teaching ideas and materials for use in the EFL classroom.
Applicants may enrol for courses beginning on 16th March, 11th May, 6th July, 27th August, or 5th October 2015. The actual dates can be negotiated to a certain extent with the course provider. Participants can enrol for periods of between 2 to 3 weeks. Each week's programme consists of up to 30 hours of classes, observations, teaching practice and planning. We also offer a number of exciting cultural activities, day trips and excursions (the cost of activities is not included into the course prices).
