Introduction
It is vitally important for students to possess a high level of reading, listening, writing, speaking and comprehension skills if they are to succeed at any tertiary level institution.
In the Foundation English Programme, students attend small classes according to their level of English ability. The programme provides students with the necessary tools for developing their English communication skills to the required level of entry for tertiary education. In addition to gaining academic English skills, students can also improve their conversation and comprehension skills that are crucial for enjoying everyday life in English-speaking countries.
IPU New Zealand offers the Foundation English Programme to first year students, enabling them to achieve English language proficiency and a set of useful study skills, as well as developing their critical thinking in preparation for a tertiary level education.
Students require a basic set of study skills in order to benefit from their learning environment. At IPU New Zealand, students are encouraged to answer the following types of questions:
- How does one clearly structure research questions and goals?
- Where does one find the necessary information? Is the information justified?
- How does one collect and analyse the required information?
- How does one arrange and present their findings in a logical order?
It is the student's responsibility to take an active approach when studying at IPU New Zealand. Teachers advise them to follow the mantra "Gain knowledge for yourself, and do not believe in everything that you are told."
The Foundation English Programme includes:
- Speaking, listening, reading and writing skills
- Study skills (research/computer skills)
- Presentation skills
- Discussion and debate
- Preparation for specialty education
- Field trips
