Africana Studies examines the history, politics, society, and culture of people descended from the African continent and the diaspora of African people. Coursework delves into social justice and issues of race and racism, challenging students to ask difficult questions. Students will also explore the art, literature, and culture of Africans, West Indians, and African Americans.

Africana Studies

The American Studies Program is one of Goucher's most interdisciplinary majors. It balances a broad foundation with a specialized concentration that students design to meet their unique interests and plans for the future. Students study history, literature, religion, music, art, folklore, and material culture, and specialize in themes such as immigration and America's education system.

American Studies

The mission of the Center for the Study of Modern Languages, Literatures, and Culture is twofold: to strengthen the liberal arts undergraduate curriculum at Goucher College by providing language programs of broad scope and high quality and to engage students in compelling transnational issues through the study of cultural texts produced by other countries.

Arabic Studies

We live in a world saturated by images, which means that visual communication dominates many aspects of our daily lives (e.g. news, advertising, entertainment, social media). It is essential for today’s students to think critically about the many ways in which images across time and cultures have been—and still are—constructed to make meaning. Goucher’s art history minor connects the history of images and artifacts with broader streams of inquiry into the visual world of the 21st century.

Art History

The demands of the arts manager has grown more sophisticated (beyond connoisseurship), and requires formalized training. The best preparation for a career in arts management is an academic background enhanced by practical, professional experience. However, most arts administrators learned "on the job" and only 20% of working professionals ever completed coursework in arts management at the undergraduate level. Goucher is among only a handful of schools in the United States that offers a packaged program of arts management courses for undergraduates.

Arts Management

Goucher's Asian Studies minor gives students a complete perspective of Asia, spanning from Pakistan and India in the Southwest to Malaysia and Indonesia in the Indo-Pacific region. The curriculum in the Asian Studies minor is designed to provide an immersion into a variety of Asian topics from history to politics. Adding the breadth of the program, regions students will be studying include Southwest Asia, the Middle East, East Asia, Southeast Asia, and the Pacific Rim.

Asian Studies

Students who complete this program will understand the importance of the scientific method in studying natural phenomena. They will develop hypotheses, design experiments, critically evaluate data, and communicate scientific data and ideas orally and in writing. Students gain a global perspective by participating in semester- and year-long study abroad programs or in three-week intensive courses, such as Tropical Marine Biology at the Roatan Institute in Honduras.

Biochemistry & Molecular Biology

After graduation, many of our students attend top graduate programs, while others embark on careers at for-profit ventures, not-for-profit organizations, foundations, institutions, educational institutions, and at all levels of government. An optional concentration in international business is available to all students but is especially applicable to business majors. Additionally, students can add a concentration in arts management.

Business Management

Goucher tailors its dance major and minor to support many career ambitions, including dance therapist or teacher, a performer or choreographer, a dance critic, a director, or with additional schooling, a physical therapist or athletic trainor. With the guidance of faculty mentorship, Goucher students develop independence and the self-initiative to pursue their passions by building their own path of study.

Data Science majors will graduate from Goucher prepared and competitive in their field, well grounded in a mathematical foundation, and with computational competence. Students will gain the ability to analyze robust datasets, an interdisciplinary perspective that has a human and ethical focus, and a perspective that a liberal arts college has the unique ability to provide.

With the influence of digital technologies across culture, art, and entertainment, opportunities abound for creative producers of media content, as does the need to become critical consumers of the products of media industries. The Digital Arts program readies students to navigate this emerging media landscape and equips them for the jobs of the future.

Our economics program is unique among most undergraduate economics programs in that we require two econometrics courses as part of our major, and one econometrics course as part of our minor. Many undergraduate economics programs do not require econometrics for either the major or minor. We choose to emphasize econometrics in our program to provide our students with the quantitative and critical thinking skills necessary to thrive in a data-driven world.

Goucher’s Environmental Studies Program is designed to encourage thinking across disciplinary boundaries in order to prepare students for meaningful engagement with central environmental questions and challenges facing current and future generations. The program offers students the opportunity to major or minor in a curriculum that bridges social sciences, humanities, and natural sciences. After completing a series of core courses in various disciplines, environmental studies majors must choose either the environment and society concentration or the environmental science concentration to complete remaining coursework.

Environmental Studies

This program offers students unique opportunities to learn about many aspects of equine health and the equine industry. Students pair classroom experiences with applied classes at our on-campus stables, which house Goucher's 26 performance horses. Alumnae/i have donated many of the horses that flex their skills with Goucher’s nationally recognized equestrian team. (All students, not just team members, can minor in equine studies.) Additionally, the Maryland Horse Breeders Association is located on campus, drawing horse industry leaders to Goucher and providing students additional resources to study the business, management, and breeding of horses through internships.

Studying language means more than just learning a new vocabulary—it means engaging new cultures, perspectives, and ways of thinking across the entire globe. You will immerse yourself in French, speak it, read it, write it, think it, and put it to use in the world, both at home and in the many francophone places where it is spoken every day. The French Transnational Studies Program connects deep exploration of language with the kind of interdisciplinary study that enables you to put your learning into practice through study abroad, service-learning, and internship opportunities.

French Transnational Studies

The History Program not only acquaints students with different ages, societies, and cultures, but it also develops powers of writing, speaking, and thinking. The curriculum is organized to provide students with general knowledge, as well as technical competencies essential in such fields as business, law, government, teaching, publishing, and museum and archival work. Practice and theory are linked through internships in agencies, libraries, archives, museums, preservation organizations, historical societies, governmental agencies, and at historic sites for practical experience.

History

The Integrative Arts Studies Program allows students to develop intellectually, creatively, and artistically beyond the boundaries of traditional art majors. Working closely with faculty mentors, students choose their own paths to becoming the kind of interdisciplinary artist they imagine themselves within the creative economy. If you are still discovering the kind of artist you want to be, or if you want to work across multiple disciplines, then this major is for you.

Integrative Arts Studies

The international business minor supplements and strengthens other majors by broadening the geographic context of the major and/or by providing greater depth to language and area studies majors by enabling students to understand the business and economic activities occurring within a given region. The concentration within the business management major requires 12 credit hours of electives that must consist of heavily international content.

International Business

Literary studies’ comprehensive core includes textual analysis, literary theory, and American, British, and international fiction. We also encourage students to tailor the program to their own interests and incorporate classes from other disciplines. With the benefit of small class sizes, faculty provide individualized instruction and mentoring, with one-on-one advising to help you choose the courses best suited to your ambitions. Additionally, our faculty are active scholars and researchers, with substantial work in their respective disciplines.

William James said philosophy is “the habit of always seeing an alternative.” By creating alternatives, philosophy holds out the promise of shaping a better world. This lies at the heart of our mission. We teach students to reflect on the meaning and significance of their own experiences by posing questions they may not yet have the means to answer. In fact, the work of philosophy is not so much to produce definitive answers as it is to question given answers, to interrogate our basic assumptions and habits of thought. The Philosophy Program at Goucher College cultivates this critical standpoint by emphasizing both the history of philosophy and the practice of philosophizing.

Goucher’s professional writing minor features different disciplines in professional writing, including creative nonfiction and journalism, as well as business, professional, and technical writing. Our courses prepare students to navigate professional workplace situations by developing rhetorical skills to write and compose in different genres. Students learn to recognize and reach the many different audiences they will encounter in professional and public contexts.

Professional Writing

Public Health is a multidisciplinary field that evolves to meet the needs of people around the world. Its primary goals include preventing disease and injury and promoting physical, mental and social health at the population level. Practitioners work to research health trends and identify disparities in health, understand the direct and indirect causes of health problems, develop strategies to improve health, and advance the equity and quality of systems necessary to the success of those strategies. Distinctive features of Goucher’s Public Health program include a strong emphasis on Global Health, Social Justice and Environmental Sustainability, as well as hands-on learning activities and study abroad. With its diverse electives in multiple departments, the program provides students with opportunities to curate their learning experiences and develop skills relevant to professional success.

Public Health

The religion and justice minor examines religion as a human category that cuts across global space and historical time. Whether examining, for example, the radical call for justice in the Jewish prophetic tradition, the spiritual quietism of the Sufi mystical tradition, the call for holy war in later Christianity, the traditions of non-violence in Buddhism, or even American secular religion, this minor allows students to explore how religion continues to influence and be influenced by political, social, economic, legal, artistic, and cultural frameworks. Focused especially on the ways in which religion can support as well as stand in tension with the aims of social justice, especially in a global context, the minor allows students to add an additional lens to any major.
