English Skills for Graduate Students

Georgetown's English Skills for Graduate Students is a three-week course open to non-native English speakers who have been accepted into a U.S. graduate program. Designed to reactivate your study skills and increase your readiness for graduate-level coursework, this course will prepare you for success in your academic pursuits. You’ll develop practical techniques and effective strategies for communicating in a fast-paced environment, navigating an American classroom environment, and working with large amounts of information.

You'll improve the following skills throughout the program:

• Lead class and group discussions and team meetings
• Understand rapid speech, unfamiliar accents, and idiomatic language
• Negotiate project ideas and plans in a group setting
• Develop awareness of formal writing tone
• Develop and deliver planned and unplanned oral presentations
• Research and write short reports and summaries
• Manage heavy reading and assignment loads on a daily basis
• Synthesize and discern data from multiple sources

Curriculum

In the English Skills for Graduate Students program, you'll attend academic programming as a cohort between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. during the weekdays, which will include lectures, case studies, group discussions, and team projects. Please note that the program will be held in-person at the English Language Center's downtown Washington, D.C. campus.

This three-week program requires a full-time commitment to attend all classes and team meetings. In addition to classroom instruction, you'll complete out-of-class assignments and projects while working at home.
