Introduction
Welcome to the English as a Second Language at EMU!
Our mission is to prepare international students, scholars, and professionals to effectively use English language skills and academic strategies to confidently and successfully participate in academic study in university programs.
Our goal is to provide non-native English-speaking students with the resources to develop reading, writing, listening, speaking, and academic skills to a level appropriate for university study and equip them with the strategies necessary for successful study in a language and culture that may differ from their own.
Who Should Study in the IEP?
- Undergraduate-level students preparing for university or professional life
- Graduate-level students who do not qualify for the Graduate Pathways program
- Full-time students with F-1 student visas
- Part-time students with F-2 student visas
- Full or Part-time students who are U.S. residents or citizens
EMU Degree Program Admission
If you would like to be admitted to a degree program, but your English test score is not high enough, you can study in the Intensive English program (IEP) before starting your degree program. When you meet all admission requirements for the degree program, EMU staff will help you update your admission and I-20 to a degree program. ** Admission to the IEP does not guarantee degree program admission.
For Graduate students with an F-1 visa who do not meet minimum English proficiency for graduate degree admission, but only need a few ESL courses there is also a Graduate ESL Pathway. Please contact us for more information if you are interested.
