Introduction

This course offers an introduction to the basic concepts related to mental health and mental illness. It takes a lifespan perspective moving from mental health issues that occur from birth to death. As well as introducing what abnormal behavior is, how it is assessed and classified through the appropriate diagnostic tools.

Introduction to Substance Abuse – HDX4T (College Course: MHA180)

This course provides an introduction to the history of substance use, and the social context in which it exists. The course outlines the theories of substance use in the context of mental health, the cultural and societal influences that impact use and abuse, an overview of drugs of abuse, myths surrounding substance abuse, and current drug policy in Canada. This course also presents an overview of substance abuse assessment, treatment settings, treatment approaches, and an introduction to the nature of co-occurring mental health and substance use problems.
