Students who elect to pursue a Certificate of Proficiency Game Development will prepare themselves for entry level work in a related profession. Game Development technical artists find varied careers in the creation of digital 2D and 3D art and animation in the video game, film, broadcast, visual effects, mobile, and internet industries.
Upon completion of program, students may qualify for work as assistants or junior technical artists in various media fields using motion graphics or post production visual effects.
This certificate is currently not transferable to four year institutions; however, some of the General Education components are transferable. The Visual Art & Design Department is committed to general and pre-professional programs and some credit may be granted by receiving institutions on a per case basis.
Classes in this certificate will create a stackable credential that may be continued as an AS or AAS within the SLCC Visual Art & Design Department.
Program Entry Requirements:
- Required: High School Diploma or equivalent
- Recommended: Artistic and technical aptitude, familiarity with traditional drawing, Photoshop, Math, and basic programming helpful.
Pre-requisite ART courses must be passed with a grade of “C” or better. Students cannot continue in advanced courses when the prerequisite for that class has not been satisfied with a “C” grade or better.
Grant project participants will be tested by the Department of Workforce Services (DWS) and Salt Lake Community College (SLCC).
Total Program/Course Fees:
Approximately $500 depending on chosen electives.
- Fees are used for maintenance and upgrade of:
- Computers, software and supplies
- Servers, hosting, and storage space
- Traditional Animation lab
- Model fees and supplies
Estimated Cost for Students:
In addition to tuition and fees, and depending on chosen electives, animation students may expect to pay an estimated $1000 for books and supplies needed for class projects and portfolio development in this program.
Note: This program is not eligible for financial aid.
Estimated Time to Completion:
The Animation Emphasis is very rigorous and drawing intensive. If students follow Recommended Sequence, completion time is three semesters.
Successful completion of ART 1690 course should provide the student with the ability to complete the test for Foundation Level Test Certification. (not currently offered at SLCC, in development).
