Program Description

This programme validated by Ulster University combines knowledge and understanding of Tourism, Hospitality and Events, with the vocational training in these areas.

This Foundation Degree is a recognised Higher Education qualification, allowing students to progress to BSc Hons courses or to obtain employment in the Tourism, Hospitality and/or Events sectors. This course offers exciting, modern and engaging content, embracing all three industries; it provides students with the opportunity to appreciate the symbiotic relationship that binds Tourism, Hospitality and Events, while simultaneously acquiring a balanced mix of academic and practical skills. The Foundation Degree also provides students with an opportunity to undertake a structured placement within Tourism, Hospitality and/or Events organisations during the final year of the programme. Placements can be undertaken locally, nationally or internationally.

Typically, weekly contact hours are scheduled for a minimum of 17 hours per week per semester. Student workload usually includes 2 to 3 assessments per module, inclusive of both coursework and exams. Students are required to undertake between 20 and 25 self-study hours per week.

All staff teaching on the programme hold relevant graduate and post-graduate qualifications, as well as holding significant industry experience.

This course may grant you privileges as an Associate student of the Ulster University and you may have access to a number of University services and facilities, including membership to the Ulster University sports centre and access to physical library materials.

Entry Requirements

Candidates must meet the following criteria:

  • A minimum of GCSE Grade C in Maths and English or Essential Skills Level 2 Literacy and Numeracy.
  • Must have studied at A-level standard and provide evidence of 80 UCAS points.


  • Provide evidence of ability to undertake the course through the Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL). APEL is a process by which you may be awarded credits for learning that you have gained in the past, and which is relevant to the course to which you have applied. It may also help you gain entry to a programme if you do not have the required entry qualifications. This may be certificated or experiential learning. For this course, eligibility for entry will be ascertained through the course interview or advice session, followed by a formal Accreditation of Prior Learning process; equivalent qualifications (inclusive of GCSE English and Maths or Essential Skills Level 2) and industry-specific experience will be considered.

The course team are most keen to discuss each applicant’s entry profile and ascertain his/her suitability for the course.

Applicants must satisfy the University’s general entry requirements and specific requirements. Each applicant is entitled to the appropriate information, advice and counselling to assess their entry level and vocational choice.

Where will it take me?

Progression routes include top-ups at university, in Northern Ireland and the rest of the UK, or employment in the relevant field. Notably, this course offers specific Ulster University enhanced progression, via a Bridging provision and subject to Ulster University minimum marks entry criteria, to the BSc (Hons) International Hospitality Management and BSc (Hons) Travel & Tourism Management.

Additionally, progression is also possible to Ulster University BSc (Hons) Leisure and Events Management. The specific vocational content of this course, along with the placement component is valuable pre-requisites to employment in Tourism, Hospitality and Events.

How will it make me more employable?

The course provides a strong vocational content delivered through Tourism, Hospitality and Events specific modules. You will be presented with concrete opportunities to acquire and enhance academic, technical (industry specific) and transferable skills such as communication, organisational skills, problem-solving, leadership and critical thinking, which will help you to apply to relevant jobs within the Tourism, Hospitality and Events industry. The programme is designed to facilitate your development of a range of graduate qualities that are highly valued in the workplace.

Through the Work Based Learning module, you will have the opportunity to undertake a period of 16 weeks industry placement (locally, nationally or internationally). The placement is aimed at reflecting students’ own affinity for either tourism, hospitality or events, as well as at enhancing both their personal and professional development. By the end of the entire course, students are expected to provide evidence of a total of 25 weeks industry experience, including the placement period.

How will I be assessed and given feedback?

The various modules of study are assessed through a combination of coursework and exams. Some modules have a practical nature and are assessed based on the professional or technical skills acquired and enhanced during the course of study (may only involve coursework). The assessment methodologies for coursework include written and oral submissions, individual and group work and result in a variety of outputs (inter alia: essays, formal and informal reports, class tests, oral presentations, poster presentations, practical tasks, role plays, employer-led scenarios), depending on the requirements of each module of study. Examinations are carried out in written form and can include a mixture of closed and seen papers. The minimum pass mark is 40%. Both oral and written feedback will be provided during your course to help improve and monitor your performance.

Additional Costs

It is recommended to budget for approximately £150 - £200 per academic year to allow for routine field trips, uniforms, learning materials and additional Part-Time qualifications which may be relevant. Any additional study trips that involve overnight stays would be additional.
