Program Description

The University of Auckland Certificate in Foundation Studies puts students on the pathway to their degree of choice at New Zealand’s top university.

Delivered exclusively by UP International College New Zealand, this foundation programme prepares international students for entry into the University of Auckland’s undergraduate degrees, ensuring they not only meet the entry requirements but are also well equipped for the challenges of degree-level study. This course lays the foundations for success.

The University of Auckland Certificate in Foundation Studies is taught at UP International College campus in the heart of Auckland’s CBD, close to public transport and a wide range of accommodation.

Subjects for standard full year foundation studies programmes

English for Academic Purposes (EAP), plus four from the list below.

At the end of the foundation studies programme, students sit a three-hour external exam in each subject. All subjects also have an internal assessment component.

Intakes

The University of Auckland Certificate in Foundation Studies takes 8 to 18 months (three to six terms) to complete, depending on the student’s academic background and level of English.

Fast-track 8/9 months (3 terms) IELTS 5.5 (a minimum of 5.0 in all bands)
Standard 1 year (4 terms) IELTS 5.0 (a minimum of 4.5 in all bands)
Extended 18 months (4 terms) IELTS 4.5 (a minimum of 4.0 in all bands)

Entrance requirements for the University of Auckland Certificate in Foundation Studies:

Successful academic experience and qualifications at Year 12 (NZ) or Grade 12/11 (Asia), Senior High School 3rd/2nd year or equivalent.

For the 8-month (three-term) Fast-track Certificate in Foundation Studies:

  • IELTS 5.5 (a minimum of 5.0 in all bands)
  • TOEFL 525/195
  • or equivalent in the ACG English Language Test (ACGELT), successful completion of ACG English School’s Academic Level 4 or other recognized equivalent.

For the 12-month (four-term) Standard Certificate in Foundation Studies:

  • IELTS 5.0 (a minimum of 4.5 in all bands)
  • TOEFL 500/173
  • or equivalent in the ACGELT, successful completion of ACG English School’s Academic Level 3 or other recognized equivalent.

For the 18-month (six-term) Extended Certificate in Foundation Studies:

  • IELTS 4.5 (a minimum of 4.0 in all bands)
  • TOEFL 450/133
  • or equivalent in the ACGELT, successful completion of ACG English School’s Academic Level 2 or other recognized equivalent.
