Program Description

The Six Week Film School

Australian Film Television and Radio School

Thirty days of our biggest and most intensive filmmaking course.

This course features all the elements of our Three Week Film School, PLUS practical screenwriting and documentary studies, with an expanded shoot and longer post production.

Are you looking to fast track your filmmaking skills, hone your screenwriting and get an opportunity to use professional equipment and studios?

Are you looking to collaborate with other emerging filmmakers & writers and add to your portfolio?

AFTRS Open’s all new, The Six Week Film School is your chance to immerse yourself in all areas of film studies and filmmaking, with a full week of short film screenwriting and including a week on producing & directing documentary.

Led by AFI and ADG Award nominee Lucy Gaffy, The Six Week Film School will feature classroom study along with practical exercises and screenings, culminating in completing a short film - with professional actors - in the AFTRS studios, all for you to take home.

Featuring award winning, industry professional tutors and tips from The Six Week Film School Executive Producer (to be announced), you’ll have plenty of guidance along the way.

Over thirty intense days, you will learn:

  • Film history and theory plus the craft areas in film production and how they work together
  • Producing & screenwriting theory: where ideas come from and storytelling essentials
  • Practical screenwriting: writing, delivering and pitching a finished short film script
  • Directing: including working with professional actors and communicating a vision with your team
  • Documentary: the unique challenges of producing and directing factual projects, including the art of the interview
  • Cinematography: including more film aesthetics - and the lighting and production design teams
  • Pre-production, shoot and post-production

Your friends and family are welcome to the AFTRS theatre for the last day's 'graduation' screening of selected assignments and the final class film.

This course has been designed for new & emerging filmmakers who are looking to take the next step. Places are limited!
