Sustainable Urban Development

General

Program Description

Sustainable Urban Development

Today, more people live in cities than ever before. This creates opportunities and challenges which require experts with combined skills in infrastructure, economic development, affordable land, housing markets, sustainable planning, and resilience to climate change in order to manage increasingly complex cities.

What will I learn?

The multidisciplinary perspective of the course will enable you to learn how to address urban challenges in your environment.

As the course is an integrated part of the MSc in Urban Management and Development, you can personalize your learning and choose among the following six specialisations in the offer:

  • Urban Housing and Livelihoods (UHL)
  • Integrated Planning and Strategies (IPS)
  • Urban Land Development (ULD)
  • Urban Competitiveness and Resilience (UCR)
  • Urban Environmental Management and Climate Change (UECC)
  • Managing and Financing Urban Infrastructure (MFUI)

In addition, you’ll learn how to apply theory to practice through a real-life multidisciplinary project taking place in Rotterdam. Every year the project changes so that you get to work on contemporary urban management issues. In the past, participants have worked on sustainable strategies for a post-war residential high-rise neighbourhood, reinventing the use of a former factory building and its surroundings and the sustainable redevelopment of an industrial area and improving the residential neighbourhood.

How will I learn?

In your first week of the programme, you will get acquainted with the history of IHS and your fellow course participants. You’ll then continue with an introduction to urban management and the city of Rotterdam. From the second week onwards, you’ll dive in the content of your chosen specialisation through a combination of lectures, practical exercises, case-study analyses, educational games, fieldwork excursions, films, discussions and debates. Two afternoons per week, you’ll join an interactive workshop during which you’ll work on your multidisciplinary project in teams.
