Top Summer Courses in Social Sciences

Students looking to get ahead in their schooling often take a variety of classes as part of their summer courses. This type of interim education can also assist those who are already in a specific career, but need to find ways to continue increasing their learning.

Social sciences help students to better understand the interactions and systems within human society. Topics covered may include how communities and populations form governments, make laws, develop economic systems, or how individuals make decisions.

July 21—August 3, 2019

Smith College and the surrounding area are home to unparalleled collections and cultural heritage institutions that offer an immersive experience in women's history.

During your time at Smith, we will explore women's lives through archival research, visits to local museums and tours of historic sites. With a focus on women and social change, you will be introduced to women who have altered the course of American history through reform, mobilization, cultural interventions and outright rebellion.

Curriculum

In Smith's special collections we will look at the letters, diaries, photographs, and manifestos that chronicle personal and political revolutions over the past 150 years. We will get to know the first generation of college women through the institutional archives of Smith and Mt. Holyoke. And we will explore feminist art in the Smith College Museum of Art.... [-]

This module introduces you to the Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT) programme, implemented across England from 2008. The programme sought to address a significant problem in the provision of psychological therapies in England but is a challenge experienced in many parts of the world. That is, limited access to ‘evidence-based psychological therapies’ for the treatment of ‘high-prevalence’ or ‘common’ mental health problems, often resulting in very long waiting times and difficulties concerning the acceptability of treatments being offered, or in meeting the needs of people with some feature of diversity.

The module is also designed to provide you with knowledge concerning the presentation of common mental health difficulties and equip you with a theoretical understanding of cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT). Further, the module provides you with a critical appreciation as to how the organisation of mental health service delivery, development of a new mental health workforce and implementation of low-intensity CBT is being used to address problems regarding the availability of evidence-based psychological therapies and excessive waiting times....
