Summary

The University of St Andrews International Summer Programme offers students aged 16 to 18 the opportunity to experience lectures and tutorials taught in the Scottish academic tradition. During their time in St Andrews students will become familiar with a number of the same lecturers and tutors that they could potentially encounter while pursuing an undergraduate degree in an ancient institution ranked 1st in Scotland and 3rd in the UK (Guardian University Guide 2018,Times and Sunday Times University Guide 2017).

Classics

The Classics course allows prospective students to discover aspects of the classical world through the study of language literature, and history. During the three weeks students will be given the opportunity to study English translations of Greek plays and Latin epic poetry to offer insight into both cultures. Daily classes in Latin language will also take place throughout the programme with the aim of students being able to read short passages by the end of the programme. Teaching will follow the Scottish tradition of lectures underpinned by seminars and tutorials. As most students will not have experienced Latin during their time in school no prior knowledge will be assumed and so the Latin will be taught ab initio.... [-]

English as a Lingua Franca: Changing Language Practices

Master’s Programme in English Studies Master’s Programme in Linguistic Diversity in the Digital Age

DATES: 8.-24.8.2017 PRICES: 850-1400 EUR CREDITS: 5 ECTS COORDINATOR: Dr Svetlana Vetchinnikova

Target Students

The course is suitable for students at Master’s and Doctoral levels as well as language professionals who have an interest in English studies or applied linguistics.

Synopsis

English has become a global language of intercultural communication and is used worldwide as a contact language between people who do not share a common native language. Non-native speakers of English are increasingly using the language with each other in areas such as academia, business, diplomacy, sport and personal relationships. How does this new sociolinguistic situation develop and how does it affect language practices? Following Mauranen (2012), this course examines the phenomenon of English as a lingua franca (ELF) from three different but interrelated perspectives: cognitive, microsocial and macrosocial. We will start by looking at the linguistic features of ELF and thinking how cognitive properties of multilingual processing can explain them. Moving on to the microsocial perspective, the students will get a chance to observe ELF interaction in the private sphere, paying special attention to misunderstandings and pre-empting them as well as multilingual practices. At the macrosocial level, we will deal with such issues as language ideologies, linguistic imperialism and language ownership. Exploring a very recent concept of ‘translanguaging’, we will discuss the complex and fluid... [-]

We are sorry but due to organizational problem the Summer School in Italian Language and Culture will not be organized this year. About

The intensive courses of Italian of the Summer School are planned according to the aims and objectives of the Common European Framework and are therefore divided into A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, C2. Students will be divided into groups by means of an entry test. Compared to ordinary courses offered by the CLI during the academic year, intensive summer courses are characterized by some specific features:

a reduced number of students, to favor individualized teaching and to cater for individual needs; an increased use of recreational activities in teaching; a special focus on communicative and pragmatic aspects and, as a consequence, an enhancement of all skills, especially oral, both receptive and productive; special attention to the cultural and local dimension, to encourage students to autonomously gain experience of the surrounding context; connection, introduction and/or reinforcement of activities, content, and themes offered in other parts of the program (cultural seminars) to integrate the various components of the educational plan.
