1950 - 2050: A century of Energy REvolution - understanding the transition of energy systems

TU Berlin Summer & Winter University
Campus Full time July 2017 Germany Berlin

Students interested in the technical and economical aspects of energy and resources. [+]

Summer University block 3: July 24th - August 17th, 2017 Course price: 1.850 Euros 18 hours of class sessions per week, 5 ECTS credit points Target group Students interested in the technical and economical aspects of energy and resources. Learning Goal/Output Understanding energy transitions towards decarbonization on a local and global scale Understanding the political decision-making processes Quantitative methods for assessment of policy decisions Working in a transdisciplinary environment Course Components The course will include the following components: - Interactive classroom-based lectures and discussions - Group work projects and presentations - Quantitative modeling sessions in a computer lab using GAMS (General Algebraic Modeling System) - Guest lectures e.g. from academia, NGOs, think tanks and the political sector - Excursions to conventional (including coal mining), and renewable energy sites Short Description There is no dispute that an average global temperature rise of more than 2°C above pre-industrial levels would lead to severe environmental and economic costs for society. A major challenge in tackling global warming is the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, especially in the electricity sector. The “Energiewende” in Germany proves that a decarbonization of the electricity sector, in combination with a shut-down of all nuclear capacities is (technically) manageable and economically viable. As a result, learning-effects and reduced investment costs enable a market-driven worldwide roll-out of new technologies. In 2014, 144 countries already set renewable targets. As a consequence, the number of global renewable generation installations in 2014, outnumbered the combined number of new fossil and nuclear capacities. This... [-]
