FROM PAST DESIGN TO FUTURE DECISION
The design of engineering structures takes place today and in the past on the basis of static calculations. The consideration of uncertainties in the model quality becomes more and more important with the development of new construction methods and design requirements. In addition to the traditional forced-based approaches, experiences and observations about the deformation behavior of components and the overall structure under different exposure conditions allow the introduction of novel detection and evaluation criteria.
Bauhaus-Universität Weimar presents special topics of Structural Engineering to highlight the broad spectrum of civil engineering in the field of modeling and simulation. The expected outputs of the summer course are to enable the participating students to deal with advanced methods in model validation and simulation and its practical application, as well as the exchange of ideas between the participating students....

»ENVIRONMENTAL DESIGN STRATEGIES«
LEARN TO OPTIMIZE THE ENVIRONMENTAL PERFORMANCE OF BUILDINGS TO DESIGN SUSTAINABLE BUILDINGS FOR THE FUTURE
The building sector is responsible for a large proportion of the world’s consumption of energy and resources, and has a significant environmental impact. Sustainability is becoming increasingly important and architects and planners have a great influence on the environmental performance of a building from the very beginning of the planning process. In a short design phase of several months, they define the environmental impacts a building will have over the next fifty or one hundred years.
This course teaches how to optimize the environmental performance of building design using digital tools and design strategies. The theoretical background will be given in form of short input presentations by different experts. This mini-lectures include cycle-orientated design concepts, cradle to cradle, reuse, energy and resource efficiency, and life cycle assessment. In addition, various tool for environmental performance assessment will be introduced, e.g. eLCA, CAALA, Grasshopper plugins including ArchSim/Diva/Ladybug/Honeybee. These approaches and tools will be directly applied within this course for a small design project....

»DESIGN THINKING« THE MINDSET OF HUMAN-CENTERED INNOVATION Design Thinking is a process for creating elegant user-centered solutions in multidisciplinary teams. But it’s much more than that: it is a mindset — another way of tackling challenges: empathetic and hands-on. Don’t talk, do! Implemented in daily work, the problem-solving potential of Design Thinking finds its expression in the form of a living innovation culture. This is, even more, the case when truly desirable solutions are sought. How this works in detail can be experienced in this workshop. In this two weeks you will experience and learn core competencies for your work in creative and innovative fields. You will go through the whole Design Thinking process multiple times in small teams. It starts with understanding the challenge, doing field research, to find a point of view; ideate on your insights to create prototypes and test your solution with users. You and your team are the most valuable resources. It is important to broach conflicts, create dynamics and make use of the different team competences for the right tasks. Therefore, we give guidance and tutorials full of creative methods — like idea-typing and brain-swarming — which you will use freely and extensively to provoke a lot of ideas. Design Thinking is structured, quick and dirty. It is always time-timed, which enforces quick decision making, in order to push for wild and spontaneous ideas. This mood is perfect to come up with truly innovative solutions for products or services. The goal is to become...

EXPLORE THE TENSION BETWEEN LIGHT, VISION AND SPACE, AND HOW OUR PERCEPTION OF SPACE IS INFLUENCED BY LIGHT.
In this introductory course into architectural lighting design, we are going to explore the science and aesthetics of light, as well as atmosphere and its effect on perception and behaviour. This will be done in an artistic and theoretic manner. We are going to look into aesthetics of space and how lighting design can add emotion to atmosphere and create a sense of well being in a space.
After some initial theoretical input, you will work on observation exercises and analyse lighting settings. Using this initial research, you will create abstract light mock-ups. Results will be shared and talked about in the group. Subsequently we will jump in scale, where the participants will be asked to challenge their perception of space, using light as a material. The outcome can be artistic and/or architectural, a daylight or an artificial lighting installation....

»BUILD YOUR BAUHAUS«
EXPERIENCE THE BAUHAUS-IDEA AND LEARN MORE ABOUT THE INFLUENCE OF THE BAUHAUS ON OUR LIFE!
The Bauhaus was a school, not a design studio. Walter Gropius wanted to educate a new generation of designers, which is why he wanted his pupils to learn a craft and to work in the workshops. He encouraged them to gain hands-on experience in the workshops. Those experiences seemed to him to be the best way of finding the design for a new century. The objects were not bestsellers from the beginning, but rather stations on the road to something new.
We will follow the advice of Gropius and the traces of the Bauhaus in our workshop. We will start in the museums with the drafts and products of the Bauhaus pupils and end up in the wood workshop, where we will bring our projects to life....

»RE.ACTION – ARTISTIC DIALOGUES«
BE INSPIRING AND GET INSPIRED - SHARE YOUR KNOWLEDGE - AND GET NEW WORK DONE!
At the start of this course we visit an art exhibition and research the accompanying media, such as catalogues, website, flyers etc. Based on your experience you develop an artwork responding to the exhibition. You are free to choose your preferred media, such as drawing, typography, photography, installation etc., and are encouraged to blend them.
At the following step each work rotates to another student and acts thereupon as a starting point for his/her new artistic response. This rotation principle varies by a defined schedule during the 2-week-term regarding space, time, rhythm, media or team partners. We discuss how the results interdependent, what media qualities emerge, and how to create image documentation of the process that is adequate to the individual results....

»EXPRESS YOURSELF! EXPERIMENTAL PAINTING« FIND UNEXPLORED POSSIBILITIES IN FORMS OF CREATIVITY THROUGH EXPERIMENTATION WITH COLOUR AND PAINTING TECHNIQUES. The course mainly focuses on providing knowledge of craft-based artistic work within the studio practice. You learn to use paint (acrylic), brushes and imaginative painting techniques through concentrated, experimental approaches to advance the development of your skills in this area. You experiment with stencils, prints and the various ways of applying brushes. You translate forms (i.e. from nature or the city) and observations in painting and learn new techniques in the treatment of color. You can also create your own paintings and work on your own. The course provides assistance and stimulation in finding compositions and the application of paint. Aside from that, we will observe how the Bauhaus artists painted and created our own paintings and collages in their style. The course offers an overview of Bauhaus painting and art practices and explains their content. Additionally, you are given an overview of the development of painting “after Bauhaus” in America and Europe and learn about contemporary painting practices that revive Bauhaus themes. By emulating a Bauhaus master lesson we better understand Bauhaus ideas. You do painting exercises in color and form and expand your understanding of their relationship. As an outcome of the course you'll have paintings and/or collages to be used as: original artworks, application material for art schools, or new forms within adjacent areas such as design or architecture. We conclude the course with an exhibition of the works...

»MOVING TRACES: DESIGN ELEMENTS & PRINCIPLES«
DISCOVER, FIND OUT AND DESIGN!
The course is made up of three parts and aims at interdisciplinary experiences of design principles like balance, tension, contrast, proportion, variation and so on.
In the first section we work two- and three-dimensional, black&white, with paper, cutter, pen, light and the elements dot and line. It is about simple abstract exercises for the perception of the effects of design principles. In the second part you will learn to create visual movement and interaction with computer. In analogy to a Bauhaus teaching method we integrate short-time body movements. Works of Bauhaus artists from media or stage will inspire you for the last section: designing an own visual moving story about elements and principles as a picture, object, a series, animation, performance or similar....

PERCEIVE, ANALYSE, EXPERIMENT AND: CREATE!
Points, lines and areas as a starting point of the bauhaus foundation course create in their interplay space arrangements. In combination with material, textures, light or colour they evolve into characteristic places.
We start with dot, line and composition in two-dimensional exercises. These experiences will be transferred into the three-dimensional area and expanded with materiality, light and colour. In the alternating process of perception, analysis, experiment and creation, basic rules of design and specified architectural space design will be derived. The visual and haptic cognition is the source for the design of several architectural models....
