Our summer programs offer eligible students from all the world the opportunity to engage in challenging academic work in the company of peers who share their exceptional abilities and love of learning. All faculty at ESRA are recognized teachers and working professionals. Our focus is on rigorous academics and learning but also on the social experience that results from bringing international students together. This program introduces students to directing, shooting, and editing a short movie (3 to 5 minutes long). Students learn to write their scripts, how to use digital filmmaking equipment during workshop sessions and go into production. It introduces students to every step from the creative idea to the finalization of a short movie project. During the first two weeks of the program, courses cover the theoretical approach of storytelling and narrative structure, visual grammar, light, and image and students develop their own script during workshop sessions. During the last two weeks of the program, students direct, shoot and edit a three to the five-minute short movie. This program features lectures, screenings, and discussion of classic movies, practical workshops, and field experience. Introducing you to a range of critical approaches to film and literature and making full use of our unique London setting, we will engage with debates on the cultural appeal and social significance of horror and fantasy, and the nature of audiences and film spectatorship. Key topics for discussion will be the depiction of London and the East End as both a landscape of fear and wonder; the representation of women, gender and sexuality in horror and fantasy; the psychoanalytic interpretation of horror and the ways through which these films engage with the history of Britain and its capital.
