Our summer programs offer eligible students from all the world the opportunity to engage in challenging academic work in the company of peers who share their exceptional abilities and love of learning. All faculty at ESRA are recognized teachers and working professionals. Our focus is on rigorous academics and learning but also on the social experience that results from bringing international students together. This program introduces students to directing, shooting, and editing a short movie (3 to 5 minutes long). Students learn to write their scripts, how to use digital filmmaking equipment during workshop sessions and go into production. It introduces students to every step from the creative idea to the finalization of a short movie project. During the first two weeks of the program, courses cover the theoretical approach of storytelling and narrative structure, visual grammar, light, and image and students develop their own script during workshop sessions. During the last two weeks of the program, students direct, shoot and edit a three to the five-minute short movie. This program features lectures, screenings, and discussion of classic movies, practical workshops, and field experience. Film Studies and the Edinburgh International Film Festival (EIFF) introduces students to central concepts of film study and includes exclusive access to the Edinburgh International Film Festival.

Weeks One and Four will introduce you to film theory including film criticism, genre, national cinemas, director-centred approaches, identity, socio-politics and related philosophical issues.

In Weeks Two and Three, you will have the unique opportunity to apply the knowledge you have already gained to a variety of selected festival films and events, beginning with the Opening Night Gala. Covering screenwriting, directing, camera, editing, and sound, the four-week summer workshops at Prague Film School are designed to lead the student from story idea to finished short film.

The first two weeks of the program are classroom-based – introducing the fundamentals of directing, screenwriting, editing, cinematography, and sound while also prepping students for their end-of- workshop short film. This three-week Summer School course enables you to develop your creative writing skills in the area of screenwriting to produce a feature film story. The course will begin with a period of research for ideas and topics, using London as a site and location for this exploration. There will be visits to galleries, museums, walking tours and talks that offer material for story development. There will be research and short writing exercises during the first two weeks of the course (which will form a portfolio for assessment) and in your final week, individual writing sessions and group workshops will focus on helping you to develop and define a single story idea suitable for a feature film screenplay.... London has been the largest European city for more than two-and-a-half centuries and has played a dominant role in the context of European cities. We are going to explore the ways in which this notion is presented in examples of European literature, fine art and film in the 19th, 20th, and early 21st centuries. The course spans three weeks and offers you a mixture of classroom teaching, film screenings, workshops and excursions. We will also make a number of suggestions for subject-related activities outside your scheduled contact hours.

The aim of this course is to develop your curiosity about, and awareness of, the multifaceted urban cultures in London as a whole, and in east London in particular. The course provides the contextual knowledge and analytical framework for you to critically engage with London metropolitan life and its various cultural manifestations.... [-]

British cinema is often celebrated for its social realism, yet has made significant and influential contributions to the worlds of horror, fantasy and science fiction. From the Gothic tradition of Dracula to nightmarish visions of London in 28 Days Later and the spectacular popular fantasies of Doctor Who and Harry Potter, this course investigates this alternative history or ‘repressed underside’ of British cinema and the ways in which these films have responded to their social and cultural production contexts.

Introducing you to a range of critical approaches to film and literature and making full use of our unique London setting, we will engage with debates on the cultural appeal and social significance of horror and fantasy, and the nature of audiences and film spectatorship. Key topics for discussion will be the depiction of London and the East End as both a landscape of fear and wonder; the representation of women, gender and sexuality in horror and fantasy; the psychoanalytic interpretation of horror and the ways through which these films engage with the history of Britain and its capital. With an emphasis on cinema, we will also compare the writing of British authors with film adaptations of their work.... [-]

This course examines the hybrid and diverse nature of the British cinema from the New Wave of the early 1960s to the advent of Channel 4 in the early 1980s. It will explore two key themes in the British cinema’s long quest for a sustainable model of film-making: the tensions between the indigenous and the international; and the recurring pattern of ‘boom and bust’ in British production. Topics covered include: the emergence of the New Wave and the ‘Swinging London’ films of the 1960s; the relationship between British cinema and Hollywood; the British film renaissance of the early 1980s; ‘state of the nation’ cinema in the Thatcher era; TV funding for film; and the emergence during the 1970s of British auteur film-makers such as Peter Greenaway, Derek Jarman, Terence Davies and Bill Douglas). Our Young Filmmakers’ Academy is aimed at 13 to 17-year-olds and is the perfect way to introduce young people to practical filmmaking. Offering training and workshops in the main areas of filmmaking, these 1-week or 2-week summer courses, located in London, culminating in the production of live action shorts, which can serve as the starting point for a career in film or TV.
