Overview

Financial data analytics is in high demand in areas such as for predicting prices at the stock market or for analyzing the dependencies of prices on underlying components. Pattern mining or recommendation techniques represent are also of interest for a broad range of applications.

However, deep learning technologies, data and pattern mining, data visualization for human Artificial Intelligence(AI) interaction and enhanced user experience poses several challenges to financial data analytics.

This Summer School will introduce the basic, underlying machine learning principles (both supervised and unsupervised). The two-week course will also cover data and pattern mining on the web of special transactions-like data as well as visualization techniques.... [-]

Summer Courses in Belgium 2019. Overview

In this Summer School, the focus is on the Internet of Things (IoT) as the main driver for future digital infrastructures. With the advances of ICT, billions of “things” will collaborate through a reliable, efficient and secure network, using distributed storage and computing resources.

Fully functioning IoT requires new technical solutions in three large technology areas. Firstly, embedded systems, for energy efficient sensing and actuation. Secondly, communication and networked system for connecting the huge number of devices. And thirdly computing, data analytics, and visualization for the IoT-based applications.

With the development of IoT solutions, the business ecosystems of the traditional telecommunication sector are challenged but also provides new opportunities for existing as well as emerging industries.... [-]

Overview

A key element in the digital transformation of infrastructure is the convergence and integration of intelligent networking and computing services for data analysis.

Our global interconnected world presents us with vast amounts of data, that is continuously being generated by countless devices and sensors. To extract knowledge and react on patterns hidden within this never-ending stream of Big Data, we must rethink the way we process data-at-rest and data-in-motion.

It is a challenge to provide core enabling functions for extracting value from the massive amounts of generated data to support breakthrough innovations in industry segments like utilities, manufacturing, and health.... [-]

Overview

Longer life expectancy creates new challenges for societies worldwide. Public budgets in the healthcare systems are under unprecedented pressure to maintain the quality of care to an aging society.

Policy makers need to find ways of providing a wide range of elderly assistance services dealing with both psychological and neurological diseases to conditions of frailty and loneliness. ICT-based solutions could reduce expensive healthcare services by detecting early stage (mental and physical) problems thus avoiding larger health problems by suitable lifestyle interventions.

In this Summer School, the Longer Independent Living theme will be introduced through interactive lectures and workshops on topics in the health value chain. There are many different stakeholders involved to deliver services that support independent living, at home and in the wider urban areas.... [-]

Overview

The EIT Digital Industry action line addresses the seamless integration of customer and retailer needs with the delivering of products through manufacturing and logistics. Digital manufacturing, referred to as Industry 4.0, uses intelligent sensors and control systems to allow real-time optimization of manufacturing and supply chain networks.

The summer school will provide an effective multidisciplinary learning environment through Open Innovation Lab concept already in place in the area of Bologna, by putting together students, university, and companies in a unique community toward the advancement of the whole Industry 4.0 ecosystem via collaborative interaction between all main actors. Moreover, informal meetings with the entrepreneurial local community will be arranged to foster exchange and generate new business ideas. Traditional classes will be integrated with other less formal teaching activities, more active and participated, by merging different ways of involving students, which will also address training soft skills: i) user-centric service design; ii) business plan and lean approach; iii) pitch preparation and attention to details; iv) creativity in innovation.... Overview

The retail sector is facing fundamental change and disruption with the emergence of e-commerce, consumer access to information and comparable offers in an increasingly digitalized and global marketplace. The dynamic and flexible omnichannel solutions - physical, online or blended - enables the seamless consumer experience in exploration, in a choice of products, payment, and delivery.

Smart digital retail solutions also enable collection and analysis of consumer trends and insights for logistics, retail operations, and customer relations management.

The Helsinki summer school will address these challenges and opportunities from a service innovation point of view relying on design thinking (service design) perspectives. We will address different service innovations inspired by technologies like customer profiling, new retail modes and new user interaction technologies like virtual and augmented reality.... [-]

Overview

The Internet of Things (IoT) is a network of physical devices with embedded software, sensors, actuators, and network connectivity. IoT technology is one of the pillars of Industry 4.0 - a new industrial business logic where self-organizing, smart factories are capable of (mass-) producing highly customized products.

Within the field of IT, one of the major challenges, besides the integration of IoT devices into existing production lines and products, is to identify valuable use cases and sustainable business models. Exploring concrete and tangible use cases could demonstrate how companies can connect their products, manufacturing processes and product development to obtain more customer-centric products and services.... Overview

A key factor in the safety of a city is resilience towards natural disasters e.g. heavy weather, earthquakes, building fires, but also towards man-made events e.g. terrorist attacks. Adding IT technologies to existing disaster management approaches will allow new ways of decentralized and collaborative communication and coordination, data and event recording and replay, and post-event analysis. The design of such a supportive IT structure is an example of “digital transformation” where existing organizations (companies, local municipality administrations, police, fire guards, hospitals, citizens) will have to find new ways of working through a collaborative and interactive change process.... Overview

Wireless connectivity for vehicles enables the communication between cars and their internal and external environments, which will improve traffic safety, instantaneous alarming of emergency services, optimize routing and planning, and make public transport services more flexible towards the individual user.

This summer school will present smart mobility techniques at a ready-to-apply level to give the participants all knowledge needed to organize, optimize and allow a smart organization of the urban mobility, which aims at identifying the needs of the urban population moving in a digital city for all purposes connected to its family, work and entertainment life.

What happened at this location in the previous year 33 students worked on cases in cybersecurity and privacy dealing e-identification and profiling, e-health and mobile devices and systems. Participants were able to visit the Security Operations Centre of Reply in Milan, the Telcom Italia Lab and the FIAT Research Centre in Trento to get direct contact with industry experts and researchers. Speakers from the University of Texas – Dallas, IBM Research Zurich, CEA LIST and Telecom Italia shed light on the importance and implementation of data security and privacy for ICT applications. Overview

Most current digital public services are local and are most often developed in isolation from other local, national or international authorities. Independently developed digital services tend to be locked into specific standards, which obstructs the development of future cross-border services.

Mobility as a service integrates public, private, peer-to-peer, conventional, decarbonized, or autonomous transport for seamless door-to-door mobility services. It benefits from the increasing openness of citizens to participate in a sharing economy and developments in autonomous transport. This Summer School will explore several applications.

What happened at this location in the previous year Participants visited different organizations like Starship Technologies, Technopol, and TTÜ autonomous bus lab. Insights from companies working in the mobility solutions sphere like Taxify, Ridango, Elmo 2.0, Ecofleet and GoSwift 39 students developed 8 teams tackling a variety of challenges ranging from providing mobility as a service, traffic safety using open data, on-demand driving solutions as well as exploring mobility analytics William Iven / UnsplashProgram Structure ... Overview

Within cities, predictive analytics play a role in many different domains such as citizen participation, city resilience, prevention of pollution, managing risks, public transportation, and private mobility. Predictive analytics provides a way to shape data into meaningful decisions. It uses data analytics to make predictions and generate strategic, operational assets.

Public authorities and private companies can benefit from these insights and provide better services to citizens. The Summer School program will focus on the opportunities that data analytics can create for cities, citizens, and entrepreneurs in a wide range of user applications e.g. telecommunication infrastructure, urban logistics, tourism, security or social Wi-Fi....
