The Institute for Engineering Design focuses especially on computer-aided product design and development - the elementary ingredients for innovation and technology leadership. Within their very interdisciplinary team, the IKT provides a practice-oriented education, which is based on distinct cooperation with international industry partners and application-oriented specific research. For decades, the IKT has been training outstanding engineers in the field of systematic product development as a worldwide recognized institution in the field of design methodology and product lifecycle management. In our four competency groups, research is being done on a broad interdisciplinary spectrum of current, future and industry-related issues.
The Summer School of mechatronic systems engineering and product innovation will introduce you to the fundamentals and challenges related to the engineering of mechatronic systems. Mechatronics is a dynamic, multidisciplinary subject combining three engineering fields: mechanical, electrical and software engineering. This complex intermeshing of disciplines requires profound technical expertise.
This highly integrated approach creates smart, inventive and evermore efficient solutions for a wide range of high-tech engineering problems.

The engineering of innovative mechatronic systems gain specific challenges which will be addressed in the summer school as well. As product development of mechatronic systems evolve the subsequent generation of products also grows in complexity. You will get introduced in these kind of challenges while working on practical case studies.
An intensive practical part will provide great opportunities to apply all the gained knowledge. The subjects can obviously only be treated with a limited level of detail, but must be detailed enough to apply the concepts on a design project which the students work on in competitive teams in second week. The case study will mainly focus on implementation of specific challenges in the conception of mechatronic systems with stepwise increasing complexity driven by new system objectives as a result of a product innovation process.
