Ruptures and Utopia in Present Societies
Modern societies are in crisis. Within growing parts of the population, confidence in democratic institutions is seemingly eroding and the political discourse is increasingly characterized by emotionality. However, these cracks and divisions in the political sphere are not only of a destructive nature but possess a utopian potential as well.
What exactly divides modern societies? What is the function of these cracks? What utopian potential do they foster?
The IPU Summer School 2021 addresses these questions from sociological, psychological and psychoanalytic perspectives. In a multifaceted program, international scholars and students engage with the following three topics:
Antisemitism and Identity Politics
Intercultural reflection groups offer the opportunity to pursue own experiences with the treated contents. The additional module of Video Documentation expects all participants to discuss, process and spread these contents in a digital manner.
Who is eligible to apply for the summer school?
The course is specially designed for master and Ph.D. students from the areas of psychology, sociology and cultural studies. Bachelor students have to be in their final year of study to be eligible for application.
Students should have some pre-knowledge in at least one of the topics addressed by the course. We will give preference to applications from students who are writing their bachelor, master or Ph.D. thesis in either Psychoanalysis or Critical Theory.
We accept applications from students from all around the world and do not prioritize any particular region. However, it is our aim to compile as a diverse group of students as possible.
General application deadline is 15 May 2021.

Unfortunately, in such a situation, the DAAD will not award any scholarship but the reduced course fee for online participation will still be due.
