Summer School 2020: Ruptures and Utopia in Present Societies

Program Description

Due to the directives of the Berlin senate concerning the spread of the coronavirus in Germany, we sincerely regret to inform interested parties that the Summer School program 2020, Ruptures and Utopia: Psychoanalytic Perspective and Social Critique, cannot take place. We genuinely thank you for your interest and hope to host the program at another point in time.

Ruptures and Utopia in Present Societies

Modern societies are in crisis. Within growing parts of the population, confidence in democratic institutions is seemingly eroding and the political discourse is increasingly characterized by emotionality. However, these cracks and divisions in the political sphere are not only of a destructive nature but possess a utopian potential as well. Emerging protest movements, such as “Fridays for Future”, point in this direction.

What exactly divides modern societies? What is the function of these cracks? What utopian potential do they foster?

The IPU Summer School 2020 addresses these questions from sociological, psychological and psychoanalytic perspectives. In a multifaceted program, international scholars and students engage with the following three topics:

  1. Antisemitism and Identity Politics
  2. Authoritarianism
  3. Generational breaks

Intercultural reflection groups offer the opportunity to pursue own experiences with the treated contents. The additional module of Video Documentation expects all participants to discuss, process and spread these contents in a digital manner.
