Program Description

SUMMER JUNIOR ENGLISH COURSE IN BROOKLYN, NEW YORK

Our English & Express Yourself Junior ESL summer program in New York is designed for students aged 14 to 17 years old to learn English in New York. It is an immersion program including general English lessons and "creative arts" workshops, full board accommodation in host families, a full program of activities and excursions, as well as supervision guaranteeing a safe and secure environment at all times.

Our ESL junior program takes place at St Francis College, located in the heart of Brooklyn Heights, 2 minutes' walk from our year-round English Language school. St Francis, founded more than 150 years ago, is a small private co-educational college. Facilities at the college include bright and spacious classrooms, an auditorium and a cafeteria where students can have lunch on weekdays before heading out to their afternoon activities. There are 3 subway stations and 6 subway lines accessible within a 3-minute walk.

The course includes 20 lessons (= 15 hours) of general English per week taking place Monday to Friday between 9:30am and 12.45pm. Our teachers are qualified, experienced and use an action-based, communicative method to encourage students to interact and use the language as much as possible, both in and out of class. There is a maximum of 15 students per class, grouped together according to level. Course materials are included (teachers use textbooks as well as authentic materials such as magazines, newspapers articles...)

THE 'EXPRESS YOURSELF' AFTERNOON ELECTIVES

The concept

We believe a junior program should be fun, engaging and inspiring. Learning English is not all about sitting in a classroom, and Brooklyn has a lot to offer its visitors, so we have designed an afternoon elective allowing students to practice an activity they love or try their hand at something new.

The workshops take place once a week on Wednesdays for about 3 hours for each session. This gives students the opportunity to socialize and practice English in a relaxed atmosphere, encouraging spontaneous conversation.

Our 2017 choices

Dance - Zumba, Salsa, Jazz & Hip Hop, Contemporary, Afro-Haitian or Brazilian-Samba fusion - This elective is ideal for anyone who loves music and dance, and would like to improve their fitness and body awareness in the process. The classes are taught at the Brooklyn-based Mark Morris Dance Group, one of the world's leading dance companies, performing across the U.S. and at major international festivals.

Digital Photography - This option is ideal to discover the art of "visual story-telling". Stop using the automatic setting and start making beautiful pictures! The class is taught by Johnathon Henninger, an award-winning freelance photojournalist. Students must come with their own camera.

ACTIVITIES & EXCURSIONS

Our activity program is designed to include the best of New York City and alternate between fun and educational outings. There are 4 half-day excursions and 1 full-day excursion per week (except the last week when Saturday is departure day).

Mondays: walking tours of iconic locations such as Brooklyn Heights/Brooklyn Bridge, High Line, Central Park...

Tuesdays: discovery of some of New York's famous landmarks such as Top of the Rock, Empire State Building, Freedom Tower...

Thursdays: educational visits to the Museum of Natural History, the MET, The MoMA...

Fridays: fun social outings to do some shopping, play sports in the park or go bowling, followed by an evening dinner in a typical restaurant.

Saturdays: full-day excursions (except on departure day) to attractions such as the Statue of Liberty, Coney Island, the Bronx Zoo...

ACCOMMODATION

Our host families

At BSL, we know that accommodation is an important factor to a successful trip abroad, so we spend a lot of time selecting the right families. They are all based in Brooklyn and the average journey time to the school on public transport is 30 minutes (can be longer for some homestays). A host family can be a couple with children, a retired couple, a single parent or even a single person. Ethnic diversity is an important factor of New York's cultural identity, so some hosts may be of Asian or Latin descent, but English is always spoken in the home. Regardless of their background and circumstances, all our host families have in common the wish to make every student's stay as comfortable and relaxing as possible.

The benefits of staying with a host family

Living as part of an English-speaking household is simply the best way to truly immerse yourself in the language and culture of a country. Students will be practicing the English they have learned every day with other English speakers, which means that they will never stop learning and improving fluency. It is also a great chance to get to know people living in New York and share their way of life. Hosts will welcome youngsters in their home as a member of their family, and in return will expect them to adapt to their way of life (meal times for example may be different to the home country). Mutual respect is the key to a successful stay.

How does it work day-to-day

Arrival day is on the Sunday before the course starts. Departure day is on the Saturday after the course ends. We can arrange for an extra night on each end of the stay if necessary (at an extra cost) to fit with flight timetables.

Students stay in twin rooms with another BSL student of the same gender but different nationality, and share the bathroom with the family members. Breakfast is included at home every morning, then students make their way to school together by public transport. They also get back home together by public transport in the evenings. Lunches will be at St Francis College on weekdays, and a packed lunch will be prepared for the Saturday excursion. Dinner is taken at home with the family everyday (except on Friday night if dinner is part of the goodbye party).

Towels and bed linen are provided and laundry facilities are available for students' use (usually one load per week).

Host families also have the responsibility to make sure students respect their curfew and are home safely in the evening.

SAFETY & SUPERVISION

Our leaders

Activities and excursions are led by experienced activity leaders, at a ratio of 15 students per leader. They are here to make sure the students are safe at all times during outings.

The activity program is compulsory and students must attend all the supervised activities organized by the school.

Health form

A health form informing us of any allergies/treatments will be sent out to the parents at the time of booking, and should be returned completed and signed to the school no later than 2 weeks before the start of the course.

Curfew

Students have to be back in their homestay every day after the activities at 6.30pm maximum, except on Fridays when they have dinner out with the group and have to be home at 8.30pm. One of the host families' duties is to inform the school if a student is late for dinner. Students are not allowed out in the evening unless their host families take them out.
