Introduction
What's the Sports Coaching Foundation Degree (FdA) course about?
This course is for students that have a real passion for sport, and want to learn about the art/science of coaching sports skills . Students will develop a range of skills and knowledge in key areas of sports coaching which will be appropriate for successful transition into a sports coaching/delivery based career. The course is ideal for those who wish to work with sports clubs, schools, national governing bodies or operate sports coaching based businesses.
The course is delivered through a range of ways including practical based work, reflective practice, sports performance analysis and planning, and organising and running sports coaching events. The course is predominantly practical based and centred on codes of conduct and professional practice. As part of the course students will undertake work experience. The course is fully supported by Manchester Leisure and work placement providers.
The course is delivered both full time and part time, predominately over three days (full time) by industry specialist staff. The staff have a wide range of knowledge within sport and coaching, and have actively been involved with professional football, power lifting, gymnastics, hockey and fitness.
The course is assessed through two tasks per module. Tasks are based around industry scenarios and are practical based in many of the modules. Development of practical and academic skills (e.g. delivering sessions, essay writing, report writing, case studies and self-awareness /reflective evaluation of own skill sets) are built into assignments to enable students to develop and grow their skills in a wide range of areas.
What will I be able to do after I've completed this course?
Upon graduation from the foundation degree programme students may have the opportunity to progress and complete a linked honours degree at the University of Salford or BA (Hons) Sport and Leisure Management.
Alternatively students will have the skills to go directly into employment. Past students have go on to work in community sports coaching, sports development, sports based management and sports based teaching contexts.
