Objectives and methods of access
The Professional Course Biennial of Photography of the Istituto Italiano di Fotografia aims to train professional photographers with a deep knowledge of techniques, languages and photographic materials, starting from the basis of photographic technique.
To participate in the course it is not necessary to have previous experience in photography when the course starts from zero, however it is advisable to have a digital reflex that will start to be used after the first few weeks (although during the first three months you work mainly in analogue optical bench). There is therefore no entry test but there is an exhaustion of the available places.
It is possible to directly access the second year of the Professional Photography Course by presenting a Portfolio including portrait photography and still life, in order to assess the quality of the images and the level of preparation. The portfolio must be sent via WeTransfer to firstname.lastname@example.org.
The didactic setting is characterized by its completeness and by the practical and professional approach that ranges from the most important sectors of the world of photography, from portraits to still life, from fashion to the nude, from reportage to the landscape, passing through techniques of contemporary shooting, photo editing, making videos with reflex and planning.
The historical and critical aspect of photography is included both in the teaching of the first year, and in that of the second, as well as the part of post production, which involves the use of Adobe Lightroom and Adobe Photoshop in the first year and Adobe Photoshop advanced and Adobe Indesign per second. The first year course is completed by optional English lessons organized in collaboration with John Peter Sloan School.
Commercial and artistic collaborations
The second year is enriched with meetings with professionals in the commercial and business field, such as the lawyer, the photographer's agent (etc.) to prepare the working reality and teach them how to present themselves to the market. Second year teaching involves the participation of students in exhibitions, publications, photographic festivals and partner events and the realization of commercial photographic projects for clients in different sectors (fashion, food, design, music, events, etc.), offering students the opportunity for a concrete encounter with the working realities. This allows the students to finish the course with a portfolio full of images that not only covers all the languages of photography, but that already includes many shots taken for clients and real events.
Istituto Italiano di Fotografia collaborates with various brands, agencies and publishers selecting students and former students for assignments and commercial collaborations. The first ambassadors of the success of our teaching formula are our former students who work a lot and in different sectors, from fashion to food, from events to reportage.

The teaching is structured in seminars and constitutes the completion of the training acquired in the first year of the course. The program provides for a constant verification of the student's technical and design growth and is aimed at creating a personal portfolio. Each seminar is held by a professional photographer in a specific sector and is divided into the following phases: analysis of the topic, realization of the assigned theme, critical reading of the images with evaluation. The second year so structured allows students to increase the sensitivity, critical skills and techniques needed to develop their own personal style capable of capturing reality and conveying their meanings.
