Admissions tests and preparation

A preparatory year is a one-year long program that introduces students to the curriculum of a full degree program at a four-year college or university. This program is available in a diverse array of subjects.

What is a preparatory year in admissions tests and preparation? There are a number of programs that are designed to help students prepare for future study. Certain programs focus on one particular subject such as English or other language prep, math prep, or university admission tests prep. Other programs provide comprehensive study in a number of areas for those who are not quite ready to enter college. Classes may include English for academic study, college math, test preparation, basic computer skills, stress and time management, and certain extracurricular activities.

This program is beneficial in a number of ways. Upon completion, students may be ready to meet general entrance requirements, prepared to make sound decisions about a study path, competitive in applying for scholarships, and capable of handling the social and academic demands of a university setting.

The costs associated with this course will vary from one place to another. Before deciding on a school, students should call the institution and ask about financial requirements as well as possible financial aid.

While participating in this curriculum may not lead directly to a career, students develop the necessary academic skills, motivation, and confidence that will help them succeed in their area of study. This, in turn, may result in graduates who go on to work in a variety of careers such as business, health care, the arts, finance, administration, management, and more. Students who took a language prep course may be prepared for international careers.

TestAS is a central standardized scholastic aptitude test you can take all over the world in one of more than 280 TestAS centers. Participants get their test results approx. 4 weeks after they have taken the test. Since you can take the test in your home country, you don't have to travel to Germany to take the test, but will know already at home, if you are enabled to study in Germany or not. TestAS can be taken in German or English - you should have a B2 language proficiency in the chosen language. What documents are required to apply to this program? Passport Secondary school certificates and transcripts (in original language and as legally attested translations to German or English) Copies of university certificates and transcripts (if you attended a university before) TOEFL or IELTS test result (if test has been taken before) Copy of Visa or Aufenthaltsgenehmigung (only applicable for students already residing in Germany) What is the admission process for this program? BIC programs are all exclusively at our campus in Berlin – in the up and coming district Friedrichshain. May I work to finance my studies? Working is not permitted for students with a study-preparation visa during the first calendar year of receipt of their visa. Student jobs (at the university or research facilities) are exempted from this rule. Is accommodation included in the tuition fees? Accommodation is not included in the tuition fees. BIC offers its own accommodations to students on basis of a waiting list. Additionally, we provide you with websites, addresses and other tips to find alternative accommodation in Berlin. Do I need health insurance? There is an obligation by law for all temporary and permanent German residents to have health insurance. For students the coverage that a travel insurance provides is insufficient. Hence, you will need to take out a health insurance from a German private health insurance provider or arrange for an extension of the health insurance you have in your home country, if the specifics of that health insurance cover the requirements that the foreign registration office (Ausländerbehörde) demands. How high are living costs in Berlin The German embassy requires proof of international students that they can finance their living costs with at least 720 EUR per month. This is a good reference point. Berlin is a little more expensive than the average city, and costs - e.g. average rent - are rising. Therefore 800 Euro per month would probably be advisable. Do I have to apply for a visa? Any non-EU student will have to apply for a study-preparation/student visa (national visa). As the application process can take up to 12 weeks, sometimes even longer, you should apply as soon as possible. You can receive advice and guidance from the BIC Admissions Team. All EU residents only need to register and apply for a residence permit, once they arrived in Germany. Does BIC help with the visa process? The BIC student advisors will provide you with exact website links, useful tips and information on how to prepare for the visa application. Do I have to know German to study this program?
