A postgraduate diploma is awarded after completion of a graduate program with studies at a master’s level but with fewer units. It is a way that students can acquire a foundation in a discipline other than their undergraduate course of study or to increase their marketability.

What is a postgraduate diploma in natural sciences? Natural sciences refers to the use of scientific disciplines to study the natural world. One can choose to specialize in life sciences such as biology or in physical sciences such as chemistry, physics or astronomy. Students can generalize or, if they know the field they wish to pursue, may combine their course of study to that end such as chemistry and astrophysics.

Advanced study in natural sciences is a great way to increase the possibility of finding employment over just having an undergraduate degree, as well as improving the salary of that position. It is also a fascinating way of gaining a deeper understanding of the world around you in a scientific way.

The cost of achieving a postgraduate diploma will depend on which institution you choose to study with and where it is located. Choosing online programs is one way that you may be able to reduce your expense.

Your potential employment opportunities will depend on the direction of your specialization. Broadly, they can include product development, research and manufacturing within your field. Technical writing is also a possibility. Industries and departments within companies that hire natural science graduates include government, research and development, environment, food, pharmaceutical, publishing, defense, energy, aerospace, health sciences, forensics, conservation, biomedical and many more.

Taking the time to study science at an advanced level not only prepares you for careers in that field, it also demonstrates a discipline that is marketable in all industries. Saskatchewan is known as the "breadbasket of Canada", referring to its strength as a primary producer of agricultural commodities and its contributions to the natural and applied sciences and biotechnology. The Food and Bioproduct Sciences Department has two main streams of research; food science and applied microbiology. Both of these areas involve the development and application of science and technology in pre- and post-harvest agriculture and in adding value to primary agriculture products. In recent years, interdisciplinary research between the two streams has resulted in improved food safety and security, which have pushed the research frontier beyond traditional food and microbial products. The Food and Bioproduct Sciences Department aims to fully utilize renewable bioresources to produce healthy foods and consumer acceptable bioproducts to support our health, the environment, and a sustainable bioeconomy. -
