This programme offers the opportunity to become a first class mathematics teacher at secondary level. Students undertake at least 120 days of practical school and college placement. Mathematics is a challenging and demanding subject within the school curriculum. Students will develop skills to teach a broad spectrum of mathematical concepts and skills using a variety of different approaches including a focus on the development of thinking skills through investigational, collaborative and problem solving activities. Students attend subject specific sessions, lectures and seminars which are designed to develop awareness and understanding of general professional issues, the nature and content of the mathematics curriculum, the role of Information Communication Technology in relation to mathematics and issues such as planning and assessment. This course is offered for assessment at two levels. You will either be assessed for and awarded, the Postgraduate Certificate in Education with QTS and 60 Masters Level Credits or the Professional Graduate Certificate in Education with QTS and 60 Level 3 Credits. The University works in partnership with local schools to provide students with a programme that has a predominantly professional focus. Students undertake two placements in different schools in addition to observation practice in a primary school.
