Academics

Our mission is simple: to provide you with the highest quality academic and cultural experience abroad possible. Intermediate students with two to three semesters of college-level French enroll in a 6-credit course that incorporates a wealth of course-related excursions.

Courses

This is a list of planned course offerings. After you are accepted, you will see a list of final course offerings in your MyIESabroad account.

French Language

  • FR 251 - Intermediate Intensive French Language And Culture (Summer)

Course-Related Excursions

To supplement coursework, the IES Abroad Paris Intermediate Language Summer Program includes course-related excursions to many sites of historic and contemporary interest in Paris. Destinations may include:

  • Ile-Saint-Louis
  • Notre Dame Cathedral
  • The Musée d'Orsay

Housing

We want to make sure that your greatest challenge is deciding which landmarks to see first or discovering the best café—not finding a place to live where you feel comfortable. We do our best to locate housing that is reflective of how the local students are living. Our goal is that when you leave Paris, it will feel like home.

Homestays – You stay in a French home in the city of Paris or its surrounding banlieues (suburbs). You eat breakfast daily and three evening meals per week with your host(s). Other meals are available at university cafeterias and inexpensive restaurants. You have the option to request a typical homestay placement or a placement in a chambre de bonne.

Apartments - A limited number of shared apartments are available for an additional fee. Apartments include kitchen facilities. Meals are not included. The Internet is available.

Student Life

Orientation After you arrive in Paris, you participate in a 2-day orientation period that includes a welcome dinner, cultural activities, a walking tour of the city and museum visits. Sessions are conducted by IES Abroad staff and faculty and introduce you to various aspects of life in France and provide practical information on housing, transportation, and extracurricular activities.

Extracurricular Activities & Cultural Events

During your summer in Paris there will be plenty of opportunities to experience the local culture. Some past IES Abroad events have included ballets at the opera, theater performances at local theaters, visits to open-air markets, a wine tasting, museum visits, neighborhood tours, picnics in local parks, and a conversation club with French students.

Eligibility Requirements

  • 18 years of age
  • In good standing at your homeschool
  • 2.5 GPA or Better on a 4.0 Scale (GPAs under 2.5 will be considered on a case-by-case basis)
  • 2-3 semesters of college-level French or the equivalent
  • Enrolled in a French course within the year before the program start date

Passport & Visa Requirements

A passport that is valid for at least six months beyond the end date of the program, with at least two blank pages is required. U.S. citizens in possession of a valid passport do not need to obtain a visa to enter or study in France in the summer. Non-U.S. citizens may be required to obtain a student visa before arrival.
