Program Description

Nice Summer – Multiculturalism in France

IES Abroad

Nice

Overview

There are many reasons why people from all over the world travel to Nice in the summer—the sunshine, the famous coastline, and lively arts scene. Nice is an ideal location on the Mediterranean, which is what also has attracted immigrants from a variety of countries and has made the region so wonderfully diverse.

Designed for students who are interested in learning about the growing diversity of France, the Mediterranean basin and Europe as a whole, our Multiculturalism study abroad program in Nice allows you to learn about the immigrant migration that has taken place over the years and enhance your cultural understanding. The program features a two-week excursion to Marseille and Morocco, where students will expand upon the materials of their area studies courses in actual field based study of these two important locations in France’s multicultural makeup.

Witness ethnic influences everywhere—see the Roman ruins on Nice’s Cimiez Hill, walk the Medieval cobblestone streets of Old Nice, visit the largest Russian Orthodox Cathedral in Western Europe, breathe the sea air on 2600 year old Port of Marseille, and taste regional Niçoise and Marseillaise fare, which is inspired by French, Spanish, North African, Arabic and Italian cuisines. When you study abroad in Nice’s Multiculturalism Summer Program, the region becomes your classroom!

Academics

Our mission is simple: to provide you with the best study abroad program possible—which includes the highest quality academic and cultural experiences. We offer unique courses that explore French language learning and area studies courses through an in-depth and hands-on approach. Our professors from the Grandes Écoles (French elite schools) enhance your academic experience and provide you with new perspectives each day in class.

While in Nice, you enroll in two courses for a total of 6 credits. Create your own academic experience by selecting from the following optional components:

  • French Intensive Language Courses are offered at the 100- and 200-level and take place during the first three weeks of the program.
  • IES Abroad Area Studies Courses take place for the full six-weeks. A two-week study tour to Marseille and Rabat, Morocco is an integral part of the area studies courses and takes place during the fourth and fifth week of the program. All students participate in the trip to Marseille and Rabat.
    • Cultural Studies
    • History

Housing

We want to make sure that your greatest challenge is deciding which landmarks to see first or discovering the best café—not finding a place to live where you feel comfortable. We do our best to locate housing that is reflective of how the local students are living. Our goal is that when you leave Nice, it will feel like home.

Apartments - While in Nice and Marseille, you will live in centrally-located studio residence apartments. Each unit has a private bathroom and equipped kitchenette. No meals are included.

Homestays - During the Rabat portion of the program, you will live with a Moroccan family and will be provided both breakfast and dinner.
