Program Description

We offer a large range of printmaking courses in London at our Chelsea Centre located just off the King's Road.

We have beginners, intermediate and advanced courses. These are part-time courses running during the day and evening.

Our lecturers are highly experienced printmaking practitioners offering a unique insight into the printmaking discipline.

The techniques you learn will offer exciting ways to build on your skills and reinterpret existing artwork in print form. The unique characteristics of printmaking will open up a new world of image making and unlock your creative potential. Many of our experienced students came as beginners and many have developed a long-term commitment continuing at degree and MA level and also setting up their own studio.

Many students say printmaking is addictive once you start! So why not come and try one of our courses.

Course Overview

If you enjoy using colour in your printmaking or painting why not try this exciting multi-colour printing technique which allows you to print several colours from a single plate or image.

By rolling different viscosities of ink across the surfaces of the plate, the process combines the principles of relief and intaglio printing achieving exciting, unexpected colour blends and effects. It was pioneered by British printmaker Stanley William Hayter in the 1960’s.

You will work on two small images simultaneously learning to deep etch an image into zinc plates to achieve different levels in the surface. You will then learn to mix different viscosities of coloured inks, how to apply them to your image and print on to paper. Once you get printing the possibilities become exciting and experimental with many variations to explore.

Printing experience is helpful, but beginners with an art background are welcome.

The studio in the Carlyle building (Room CG05) at the Chelsea Centre is light, spacious and well-equipped with specialist facilities for etching. There are 2 Rochat presses bed size 26 x 56 inches.

The course fee includes all materials.

Maximum 8 places.
