Academics

IES Abroad’s mission is simple: to provide you with the best study abroad program possible—which includes the highest quality academic and cultural experiences. That is why we partnered with the Slade School of Fine Art, University College London.

The Slade School of Fine Art, University College London

Founded in 1871, Slade prides itself on its concern with contemporary art, its practice, as well as the theories and histories that inform it. Along with the approximately 260 students enrolled at Slade, you have access to some of the best art resources in the world, from the teaching staff, consisting of professional artists with regular national and international exhibitions, to the incredible range of opportunities to study first-hand works of art in local galleries and museums. Slade is small in size, ensuring an intimate, supportive, and challenging environment for artists.

Courses

The academic program at Slade is based on independent studio work rather than specific courses. You work one-on-one with tutors to design a course of study and evaluate progress. You are expected to generate and sustain your own program of work, and are assigned a personal tutor. Instruction combines tutorials, studio, and seminar programs, and demands that you be actively engaged in all forums. You are awarded 16 credits for the term. The independent studio program at Slade offers individual studio space for concentrated work and tutorials in Drawing, Painting, Sculpture, or Fine Art Media (including Print, Film and Video, Photography, and Electronic Media). Disciplines include:

  • Fine Art
  • Contemporary Art
  • Contemporary Art History
  • Contemporary Art Theory

Advising & Support

Even though you’re directly enrolling in one of our partner universities, we’ll be there for you whenever you need us.

Advising

Choosing and directly enrolling in courses abroad can be confusing and overwhelming. This is why we offer you predeparture advising that’s specific to your needs. Our goal is to provide support and guidance throughout your application and enrollment process. But our advising services don’t stop there. While you’re in London, our staff is available to help you transition into your new home.

Support

The support services we offer IES Abroad direct enrollment students are specifically designed to help you achieve your study abroad goals as effectively and smoothly as possible. We know studying abroad is an adventure, and, at times, you may need help or just someone to talk to—that’s why our staff is there for you.

On-Site Staff

Whether you have questions about academic requirements, housing, or well-being and safety, our London-based IES Abroad staff is available to support you. Because of our close relationship with the universities in London, IES Abroad is also able to offer you unique academic, social, and cultural opportunities. Our staff in London accompanies you throughout orientation, as well as at the IES Abroad field trips and cultural events.

Housing

We want to make sure that your greatest challenge is deciding which landmarks to see first or discovering the best café—not finding a place to live where you feel comfortable. We do our best to locate housing that is reflective of how the local students are living. Our goal is that when you leave London, it will feel like home. As part of our direct enrollment services, we offer well-located, comfortable housing for all students because securing housing independently can be challenging. IES Abroad’s housing options meet our safety and security standards. Student Houses - Live in one of University College London’s self-catered student houses. Kitchens are provided where you can prepare your own food, or meals may be bought from the various food outlets on the main UCL campus. Placement in UCL housing is competitive and applying early is recommended. All rooms have Internet access.
