Academics

IES Abroad’s mission is simple: to provide you with the best study abroad program possible—which includes the highest quality academic and cultural experiences. That is why we partnered with the Courtauld Institute of Art.

The Courtauld Institute of Art

IES Abroad has the honor of being only of a select few study abroad providers to have a partnership with the Courtauld Institute of Art, giving IES Abroad art history majors an exceptional opportunity to study at this world-renowned institute. Founded in 1932 and rooted in in-depth historical analysis, the Courtauld curriculum is designed for students who are prepared to be actively engaged in the most challenging and advanced critical topics of Art History. With small-group instruction at the heart of the academic experience, you are expected to take responsibility for mastering the material and participating fully in discussions.

Courses

Students typically register for the standard second-year undergraduate program of study at the Courtauld for either a single semester or an academic year. Small-group instruction is at the heart of the academic experience. The program of study could include broad historical period coverage or more specialized and in-depth investigation of two periods and issues relating to two broader fields of art history. Areas could include Classical/Byzantine/Medieval; Renaissance; Early Modern; or Modern/Contemporary. Dependent on previous coursework, you may be assigned or be able to choose from a range of survey and texts and contexts courses. You may also wish to pursue independent studies. Fall Semester Students studying at the Courtauld in the fall semester enroll in one Frameworks for Interpretation course, and one Period course. Past Period courses have included:

  • Decline and Fall: Art and Transformation in Late Antiquity
  • Art in Venice c. 1420 - 1510
  • Rococo to Revolution: Art and Society in France c. 1715–1790
  • Histories of Twentieth-Century Art: American Art 1945 – 1972
  • Cathedrals in Context: Religion and the Great Church in England 1170 - 1350

Spring Semester Students studying at the Courtauld in the Spring semester will enroll in one Texts and Contexts course, and one Theme course. Past Texts and Contexts courses have included:

  • The Metaphysics of Art History: German Art History from Kant to Gombrich
  • Man, Nature and the Construction of the Landscape Idea
  • Approaches to the Architecture of Michelangelo
  • Monuments and Memory
  • Artists’ Writings: 1960s to the Present

Advising & Support

Even though you’re directly enrolling in one of our partner universities, we’ll be there for you whenever you need us.

Advising

Choosing and directly enrolling in courses abroad can be confusing and overwhelming. This is why we offer you predeparture advising that’s specific to your needs. Our goal is to provide support and guidance throughout your application and enrollment process. But our advising services don’t stop there. While you’re in London, our staff is available to help you transition into your new home.

Support

The support services we offer IES Abroad direct enrollment students are specifically designed to help you achieve your study abroad goals as effectively and smoothly as possible. We know studying abroad is an adventure, and, at times, you may need help or just someone to talk to—that’s why our staff is there for you.

On-Site Staff

Whether you have questions about academic requirements, housing, or well-being and safety, our London-based IES Abroad staff is available to support you. Because of our close relationship with the universities in London, IES Abroad is also able to offer you unique academic, social, and cultural opportunities. Our staff in London accompanies you throughout orientation, as well as at the IES Abroad field trips and cultural events.

Housing

We want to make sure that your greatest challenge is deciding which landmarks to see first or discovering the best café—not finding a place to live where you feel comfortable. We do our best to locate housing that is reflective of how the local students are living. Our goal is that when you leave London, it will feel like home.

Residence Hall – You will live in an international student residence hall located in central London. You and another IES Abroad student share a room with an attached bathroom and will either have access to a common kitchen with others on your floor or a kitchenette in your room. No meals are included, but there are many affordable eateries nearby. There are laundry facilities and common areas with wireless Internet (and 24-hour Internet access in your room) on various floors of the residence hall. Enjoy the 24-hour security and a short walk to public transportation.

Student Life

Orientation IES Abroad Orientation Upon arrival in London, you participate in an introductory orientation with the IES Abroad London staff. Designed specifically for direct enrollment students, the IES Abroad orientation program introduces you to your direct enrollment program, your fellow students, and to London. Other highlights may include a bus tour of London and other cultural activities. Also, you learn about the teaching methods of British professors at the Courtauld. University Orientation You also attend orientation at the Courtauld, where you'll get acquainted with the logistics of student life.

Extracurricular Activities & Cultural Events

Redefine the way you live and learn in London through our cultural events, such as:

  • Touring Parliament, royal palaces, and gardens
  • Attending local sporting events, such as the English Premier League
  • Going on outings to London’s diverse markets
  • Going to world-class performances at London’s many entertainment venues

University Clubs & Events

Because The Courtauld is affiliated with the University of London, you have many opportunities for further integration with local students on an extracurricular level. The University of London is a federation of 28 independent institutions, many of which have active student organizations.
