Program Description

»LIGHTING DESIGN«

EXPLORE THE TENSION BETWEEN LIGHT, VISION AND SPACE, AND HOW OUR PERCEPTION OF SPACE IS INFLUENCED BY LIGHT.

In this introductory course into architectural lighting design, we are going to explore the science and aesthetics of light, as well as atmosphere and its effect on perception and behaviour. This will be done in an artistic and theoretic manner. We are going to look into aesthetics of space and how lighting design can add emotion to atmosphere and create a sense of well being in a space.

After some initial theoretical input, you will work on observation exercises and analyse lighting settings. Using this initial research, you will create abstract light mock-ups. Results will be shared and talked about in the group. Subsequently we will jump in scale, where the participants will be asked to challenge their perception of space, using light as a material. The outcome can be artistic and/or architectural, a daylight or an artificial lighting installation.

The course is a mixture of theoretical input and practice oriented assignments that looks at light as a dimension of space, and one that creates atmosphere. The participants will be introduced to methods used to analyze lighting settings and communicate lighting ideas. In this introduction to architectural lighting design, you will be learning some of the lighting basics, gain technical know-how, whilst creating experimental lighting settings using a hands-on approach.

The exercises will be done in small groups and individually. The days will be divided into working, sharing and input sessions. At the end of this course, participants will be aware of what lighting can do, how it can impact space and how to incorporate it in their designs.

Educational target:

Learn to understand light: learn how light and its components define space, understand the impact of light on our perception of space, learn to observe lighting effects, to design with light, to use different techniques of visualising light, and to incorporate light in your design projects - these can be architecture, interior design or product design.

The course language is English.
