This course is intended to provide a vehicle for international students who wish to improve their English language proficiency and become familiar with the conventions of Higher Education in the UK. Students who successfully complete the course will be awarded 120 transferrable academic credits and will be assisted in applying for their chosen progression courses either within Cardiff Metropolitan University or at other UK universities.

Course Aims

Knowledge & Understanding

  • Use the main English verb tenses for a variety of purposes including giving narratives, reporting, expressing possibility and probability.
  • Use passive constructions to express mood and write accounts and instructive texts.
  • Use relative clauses to define subjects and provide additional information.
  • Use conditionals to express likelihood and cause and effect relationships.
  • Use different styles of English including formal and informal register and academic English.
  • Understand the rigours of UK university studies in preparing for and accurately recording lectures, conferences and seminars.
  • Understand academic and topic-specific vocabulary while avoiding jargon where possible.
  • Discuss aspects of UK life and how they apply to international students.
  • Meaningfully reflect on their experiences of studying at a UK university.

Skills & Other Attributes

  • Improve their literacy skills in order to cope with their chosen progression programme.
  • Identify and organise information they have encountered in a variety of contexts through the receptive skills of listening and reading.
  • Construct simple, compound and complex sentences in order to produce appropriate texts.
  • Take part in meaningful interactions with native speakers in a number of contexts from informal to academic.
  • Give coherent oral presentations on their chosen topic of study.
  • Apply their knowledge and understanding in real-life situations using appropriate vocabulary.
  • Analyse texts to infer a writer's opinions or biases and identify facts.

Entry Requirements

Students must be over the age of 17 and have an IELTS level of 4.5 or above or an equivalent grade. A minimum of IELTS 4.0 in each component or equivalent is required under UKVI regulations.

Up to 21 Contact hours per week starting at 9 am each weekday.
Cost: £8,950.

This course is delivered on the Cyncoed campus.

This first two terms of this course are delivered on the Cyncoed campus. The third term is delivered on Cyncoed or Llandaff and start times may vary.


Students who successfully complete the course will receive a level 3 foundation certificate and be awarded 120 transferrable academic credits from the Cardiff Metropolitan University.
