This class is aimed at students who want to achieve greater fluency and confidence in their spoken English. Students will develop their presentation skills and also work on test-taking strategies for future English language examinations. Students will also have the option of taking the IELTS exam (16 years plus only) whilst they are at the summer school. For more details please contact our Admissions Team.
Working in small groups, classes will cover:
- Reading and comprehension
- Summary and synthesis of text
- Writing clearly and coherently
- Presenting information and ideas
- Communicating as a native speaker
- IELTS test taking
Learning outcomes for all classes are to see our students grow in confidence and develop their overall communication skills.
The IELTS test assesses your abilities in listening, reading, writing and speaking.
Students of all ages are welcome to join the IELTS preparation class. However, we recommend that only students aged 16+ and who have an upper intermediate level of English take the IELTS examination during the summer school.
You will listen to four recordings of native English speakers and then write your answers to a series of questions.
Assessors will be looking for evidence of your ability to understand the main ideas and detailed factual information, the opinions and attitudes of speakers, the purpose of an utterance and evidence of your ability to follow the development of ideas.
The Reading component consists of 40 questions, designed to test a wide range of reading skills. These include reading for gist, reading for main ideas, reading for detail, skimming, understanding the logical argument and recognizing writers’ opinions, attitudes and purpose.
- Academic Writing (60 minutes)
Topics are of general interest. For example, you will be presented with a situation and asked to write a letter requesting information, or explaining the situation. The letter may be personal, semi-formal or formal in style.
The speaking component assesses your use of spoken English.
We expect all students to engage with course concepts by thinking, reading, writing and participating to the best of their ability.
This will include working as part of a team but also working on individual assignments.
Our primary goal is to provide constructive feedback on course work and engage students in conversation. A final report will be drafted upon completion of the class, which will discuss what was covered in class, areas for development, strengths and individual contribution.
