Our premier program is the Intensive English Program. This program is divided into three levels of instruction – Beginning, Intermediate, and Advanced. Each level is divided into six 4-week sections. Within each section, students take courses in grammar, writing, reading, and listening and speaking, which are designed to help students develop proficiency to communicate with American speakers both orally and in writing. The goal of this program is to help students advance academically and professionally. Each session is comprised of 72 hours of classroom instruction. A placement test is given to determine an entering student’s proficiency level. The program is designed to be completed in 6-18 months.
*Tuition for international students and tourists includes one 18-hour/week Intensive Program + one 3-hour/week. Enrollment Excel accepts students at any time and has a system in place to help students acclimate to the class from the time of enrollment. Therefore, prospective students do not have to wait for a session start date to enroll. Visit Excel between the hours of 8-4 M-Th and 9-2 Fri & Sat. Intensive English Program The goal of the Intensive English Program is to help students advance academically and professionally by providing them the knowledge and tools to communicate with native American English speakers both orally and in writing with sound grammar construction and an expanded vocabulary. Beginning The Beginning level is for students who wish to develop basic skills to communicate in spoken and written English in order to enter the Intermediate level and to function at a rudimentary level while living in the United States. Goal for Beginning Grammar To introduce students to the most essential sentence structures, rules, and guidelines of English grammar for conversational purposes and to help them become interactive in American society at a basic level and prepare them for an expanded study in the next levels. Goal for Beginning Reading To provide students with the tools and knowledge to read and understand ESL-controlled reading material while increasing their vocabulary and strategies to answer detail questions about what they have read. Goal for Beginning Writing To help students construct simple, compound, and complex sentences and 5-7 sentence paragraphs using a variety of writing formats, techniques, and strategies and grammatical structures that will allow them to communicate their thoughts in writing in a cohesive and effective manner. Goal for Beginning Listening/ Speaking To equip students with a variety of sentence patterns and the knowledge and skills to combine simple verb tenses, nouns and pronouns, prepositions, adjectives, and modals into questions and statements in order to engage in conversations about daily activities and experiences in the United States. Intermediate The Intermediate level is for students who desire to expand their skills to communicate in spoken and written English in order to prepare for the Advanced level or for personal development to comfortably manage their lives in America. Goal for Intermediate Grammar To give students the tools to formulate sentences constructed with a clearly identified subject, all verb tenses, complements, and object phrases based on American English grammar rules and guidelines to communicate clearly, accurately, and coherently in a variety of situations while staying in the United States. Goal for Intermediate Reading To help students develop the skills to read and interpret a variety of ESL-controlled and original texts and communicate their opinions, ideas, and experiences with an expanded vocabulary. Goal for Intermediate Writing To provide students the knowledge and tools to brainstorm, outline, develop, write and edit various paragraph formats with a topic sentence, sufficient supporting details, and a concluding sentence. Goal for Intermediate Listening/ Speaking To help students develop the tools and strategies to listen for specific elements in ESL-controlled lectures and short talks, take notes on the main ideas and important details, and evaluate the content in classroom discussions while sharing ideas and opposing viewpoints. To help students develop the skills to research, prepare, and orally present for 3 minutes on topics of relevance and interest. Advanced The Advanced level is for students who need to develop mastery to communicate in spoken and written English in order to have the necessary proficiency to enter institutions of higher learning or the professional workplace in the United States. Goal for Advanced Grammar To help students achieve mastery to communicate effectively and proficiently with a command of noun and verb phrases inside simple, compound, and complex sentence structures while following the guidelines for articles, prepositions, and punctuation. Goal for Advanced Reading To help students achieve mastery to communicate effectively and proficiently with a command of noun and verb phrases inside simple, compound, and complex sentence structures while following the guidelines for articles, prepositions, and punctuation. Goal for Advanced Writing To brainstorm and develop a variety of organized, cohesive essays on various topics with effective introductions, fully supported body paragraphs with topic sentences and relevant details, and an effective and concise conclusion. To provide students the tools to employ editing skills to find and correct errors in format, grammar, and punctuation. Goal for Advanced Listening/ Speaking To provide students with the tools and strategies to master listening to, taking notes on, and thinking critically about ideas in academic lectures and informative talks, while sharing ideas and opposing viewpoints with logical justifications.
